Welcome to the Apple Box Podcast! In this episode, we talk with Toronto-based Director, Mike Rae!

Hailing from the small town Belleville in Canada, Michael always has had a desire for storytelling. Be it chasing friends down his local ski hill terrain park with a first-generation GoPro, or filming weddings to pay for his education. Michael always wanted to say something for someone. The ‘someone’ who most of the time, didn’t know they had anything to say. Michael’s innate ability to see stories and capture authentic emotion developed at a young age, it was clearly evident when a GoPro and subscription to SonyVegas Pro was his only medium. But with the development and increasing accessibility of camera technology, Michael was able to see his self-taught skills and inherent creativity to their fullest potential. Michael’s clients have included, but are not limited to; Canadian Tire, Hydro One, Amex, NBA, The Toronto Raptors, Canada Goose, Toronto Blue Jays, Gay Lea, and Microsoft.

Yana shares how she was displaced from her home in Ukraine and forced to flee in order to escape the war. Without a home, her family, or her friends, Yana travelled across 8 different countries in search of a new place to call her home. Lost, confused, sad, and scared, Yana finally landed in Canada. Being homeless, she knocked on as many doors as possible in order to restart her filmmaking career. Eventually, she met a commercial producer in Toronto, who believed in her vision and her story. Now, at 25 years of age, she is working consistently as a music video director whilst branching into narrative and commercial projects. Yana shares her creative process as a director, what she looks for in a cinematographer, what inspires her storytelling, and so much more.

With 20 years of industry experience, Barry has worked on commercials for Kelloggs, TD Bank, RBC, and Loblaws. We discuss how he became an office PA for a music video production company at 17, his pre-production process, how he collaborates with producers in the quoting stage of projects, using previsualization tools, his favourite lighting equipment, his use of hard light, finding a point of view as a Cinematographer, the importance of being a well-rounded human being, as well as being a specialist in an ever-competitive marketplace.

Towards the end of the episode, we also break down a food commercial that he shot on location in 2021 for Tre Stelle.
