Born in Pendleton, Oregon, Shannon's lifelong passion for dogs and training propelled her into the world of Schutzhund—a European canine sport renowned for testing a dog's tracking, obedience, and protection skills. Training under the tutelage of 1988 world Schutzhund champion Gene England, Shannon acquired extensive experience and knowledge in this specialized training method. Her diligence led to a decade-long competitive career at local, regional, national, and international levels, culminating in her winning the 2003 European Championship in Diest, Belgium.

Shannon's dedication to canine development is exemplified by her successful establishment of Man's Best Friend Boarding and Training Kennel in Battle Ground, Washington, in 1997. Over the years, Shannon and her team have trained thousands of dogs, addressed various behavioral issues, and provided solutions for both family pets and service dogs.

In 2011, Shannon was approached by a U.S. Veteran of the Iraq conflict who sought her assistance with his service dog. Deeply moved by the transformative impact of the service dog on this Veteran's life, Shannon was inspired to found Northwest Battle Buddies in 2012. To date, NWBB has partnered hundreds of professionally trained dogs with Veterans from all branches of the U.S. military, with Shannon overseeing the extensive training and care of all dogs and handler instruction provided to each Veteran.

It was an honor having Master Sergeant (Retired)Crystal C. Romero on the show!

Crystal is a military veteran who has served 16 1⁄2 years in the US Army National Guard, serving full-time Active-Duty Operational Support primarily in her home state of New Mexico.

Today, she is an activist for veterans’ causes and has had a significant role in passing legislation related to military sexual assault and veterans’ mental health.

In this episode she will discuss her motivations for joining the military as well as the powerful meaningful work she has done. Crystal also get's into discussion on many of the difficult aspects of her job that took an emotional toll of her well being.

After her honorable discharge, in 2014, Crystal struggled to adjust to civilian life and found herself battling depression and PTSD. That struggle is what prompted her to start volunteering to help other veterans, who are presumably, worse off than she is. This was to be her path to redemption and the way she plans to make her mark in the veteran’s community: through her advocacy.

Crystal always stood up for what she believed what was right no matter what the implications were. Which makes her an amazing person that I have had the pleasure to meet and have as a special guest.

It was a great pleasure having Kevin Doyle and Benjamin Caldwell on my show as special guests.

Benjamin starts the episode by expressing what his main motivations were for writing his book “Saving Psychotherapy”.

Then both Benjamin and Kevin give their professional insight into the mental health and addiction crisis as it comes to the professionals working in the behavioral health field. This entailed discussions on the current behavioral health field workforce issues from low staff, low pay, and the many behavioral health professionals leaving the field.

This also led the conversation to what we as a behavioral health professionals can do to improve these issues so the future generation of mental health and addiction professionals don't have to go through it.

We also asked the difficult questions on counselor supervision and the reasoning behind the number of required hours for licensure. The tough question being why is it at a certain number of hours? Do these hours represent higher adequate skills or professionalism? Is there research out there that supports the benefits of 3000 to 4000 post graduate supervision hours?

Why does it seem that every year it becomes more difficult to be a professional in the behavioral health field not only for the post graduate individuals but for the individual’s still in graduate school?

Benjamin and Kevin also get into information on policy’s and the state legislature so we as a profession can know what to do to ban together to improve these issues we are having in the behavioral health field to further avoid issues like reimbursement rates being reduced and substance use treatment centers from being shut down.

Known for “cannabis, comedy, and charity,” Doc performs motivational standup comedy. In 2018, he created Holy Smoke Misfit Missionaries as a nonprofit out of their desire to help alleviate homelessness after informally volunteering for years.

Holy Smoke is a homeless outreach with a Vegas flair. Among our volunteers are comedians and other community advocates. Our mission is to help by providing life skills training and outreach services. Our teams specialize in assisting those who live in the maze of tunnels beneath Las Vegas’ streets.

Would other work-related experience be sufficient to enter the masters level counseling program over having a bachelor's degree?

The difficult topic of gatekeeping was discussed as to the process for the student as well as the graduate school professors.

Then finally we get into discussions on the current behavioral health field workforce issues we are currently having. We talk about why there are workforce issues as well as how can we as a profession improve upon these issues so the future generation of mental health and addiction professionals.

In this special BHI episode, I had the great pleasure of discussing the topic of substance use addiction, family systems, and the process of grieving with Gloria Englund and Margaret Swift Thompson.

We went into discussions on how family members may communicate and set boundaries with a loved one who has a substance abuse addiction.

Gloria self-discloses her own experience regarding her son's addiction and what she learned from that experience. Both Glorian and Margaret explain what they have learned working with individuals with substance abuse and their families.

We also get into the topic of grieving and how it may look different for each individual morning of the loss of a loved one.

Today, we’re joined by Dr. Samuel Ko, a Board Certified Emergency Physician and medical director of Reset Ketamine in Palm Springs, California.

Dr. Ko completed his emergency residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center, where the mission is “To Make Man Whole.” Dr. Ko takes this same holistic approach at Reset Ketamine, where he always makes sure to take into account the biology, psychology, sociology, and spirituality of his patients.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Ko and his wife Kim are co-creators of the online course Ketamine StartUp, which teaches other physicians how to start their own ketamine clinic.

Listen in as Dr. Ko reflects on the 20-year journey that brought him down the unique path he walks today in the world of healthcare, and does a deep dive into the ins-and-outs of ketamine and the four-stage process that all of his clients undergo at Reset Ketamine.

As a pre-medical student at Seattle University in Washington, he worked as a research technician at the University of Washington-Dept of Neurology studying neurosyphilis. He performed a variety of procedures on laboratory animals and, by happenstance, the medication that he used regularly to reduce their pain was ketamine!

Later on, Dr. Ko gained an interest in emergency medicine, and along the way met a number of mentors who taught him the importance of spirituality in healing. Coincidentally, his emergency medicine residency program at Loma Linda University Medical Center saw the expanded use of ketamine outside of the anesthesiology department and O.R., giving him even more experience with the dissociative anesthetic.

As fate would have it, Dr. Ko found running a conventional practice unfulfilling, not to mention corporate healthcare as a whole.

In April 2018, Dr. Ko opened Reset Ketamine in Palm Springs, California. Beyond the simple delivery of ketamine, he believes in looking at the holistic picture of patients, utilizing the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of medicine. "Psychedelic Healing" Interview with Emelyn Rozas

Today, we’re joined by Emelyn Rozas, a behavioral health specialist, artist, and psychedelic

advocate based in Toronto. She is a part of the executive management team at the Toronto

Psychedelic Community.

Listen in as Emelyn discusses how immigrating to Canada from Peru at a young age had a

direct influence on the path that she would later traverse in adulthood. She opens up about a

troubled childhood which included being a victim of pedophilia, and how a lack of resources and

support for the benefit of her mental health eventually led Emelyn to pursue the modality of

psychedelics.

Emelyn offers her advice to those who are considering psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and

other forms of therapeutic psychedelics. She also speaks on the major lessons she has learned

about healing past traumas. This includes the harsh reality that you may never be able to

forgive those who have harmed you, but the best thing you can do is forgive yourself and be

willing to let go of the shame that has held you back from growth.
