Creativity vs. Consumption: Are You Overdue for an Unplug? (Episode 253)

OK, if you’re honest with me, I’ll be honest with you:

How many podcasts, emails, newsletters, trainings, etc.etc.etc. are on your “to listen/watch/read” list?

Last I checked, I had 103 podcast episodes downloaded.

Kate told me her Goodreads “want to read” list currently sits at 398 books.

Will I listen to some of those podcasts? Absolutely. Will Kate read many of those books? 100%.

But there’s always going to be more.

Don’t get me wrong, consuming information is necessary!

But at a certain point all that consumption can start to feel like just another task you can check off your list.

It feels productive.

And sometimes it is. And sometimes you space out after listening to the same 30 seconds of the podcast 3x over and realize you “listened” to it … but you didn’t do anything with it.

Heck, sometimes I don’t even remember what I just heard.

So, Kate and I decided to share our best tips for unplugging on this week’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast.

Why?

Well, sometimes the best thing you can do for your business isn’t reading another marketing or copywriting tip.

It’s not downloading another guide.

It’s not listening to podcasts (I know, shooting ourselves in the foot a little there …)

Sometimes the best thing is turning it all off for a bit and letting your brain breathe.

The Dangers of Steady Copywriting Clients (Episode 212)

Having one steady, high-paying copywriting client is the dream, right?

Well, to be honest, no.

Copywriting is a little bit like investing. Putting your eggs all in one basket leaves you vulnerable to the whims of one company. That’s why diversification is so important.

When you have multiple copywriting clients, it doesn’t matter if work slows down with one or if they go out of business entirely! You’ve got other work.

And going from a 100% full workload to 90% or even 85% workload is much better than 100% to 0%. Think about it: if you’re earning $100,000, and you lose a client that is 15% of your business, you’re still earning $85,000. If you have one client? You’re down to $0.

So, on this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are digging into why the allure of one magical client shouldn’t be all that appealing and how to structure your client roster so you’re setting yourself up for a thriving career—not a rollercoaster ride.

And, yes, this means you never stop pitching. Pitching from a place of abundance—when you have clients and income—is much more fun than panic pitching. (Trust me: panic pitching is bad news.)

What is Copywriting? (Episode 1)

The MOST exciting thing about copywriting in 2025?

All the opportunities.

Think about it: the 21st century alone has already brought so many new opportunities for copywriters:

The Internet—all of the Internet!!!—was largely just becoming mainstream at the start of the century. (For context, Amazon was started in 1995.)
Meta, still known as Facebook, didn't even get founded until 2004.
TikTok was founded in 2016.

All of this brought new mediums where copywriters are needed:

Online product descriptions
Banner ads
Email
Webpages
Social media ads

Not to mention there's still a ton of print, out of home, radio, and other mediums that need copywriters ... (CCA students, do NOT overlook these opportunities—so much of copywriting is still for offline mediums!)

So, as I write this in 2025, I couldn't be more excited for all the opportunities yet to come! Yes, even with AI.

AI is just another tool in the copywriter's toolkit. And, as copywriting has proven time and time again—through major cultural transitions and eras—it's absolutely needed.

Which, I don't know about you, but that level of staying power—and the continued need for trained copywriters over the centuries—is pretty darn exciting.

Kate and I *finally* recorded an update to answer the "what is copywriting" question for 2025.

And, spoiler, you'll notice that even though the world is changing (as it always does!), there are still some copywriting principles that just stand the test of time.
