Episode 29 Cracking the communication code, the #1 step to achieve success in Business partnerships and life

In today’s show we zoom in on pillar no 2 communications. It’s one of the biggest pieces and one that needs continuous attention. Communication is fundamental for any business and in life in general. Definition of communication: “communication - noun the imparting or exchanging of information by communication skill was left out, listening. The topic of communication is extremely broad with room for variations, assumptions and perception of what is deemed as effective communication and what’s not. It is a balancing act and with so much information and stimulation available it is an area that requires ongoing attention and focus. In a partnership, having a deep understanding and appreciation of each other's preferred communication styles can be the game changer and allow you to communicate effectively. My favourite saying is: Say what you mean, mean what you say but don't say it mean. The question today is…. How effective are you as a partnership in your communication? Are you able to communicate your ideas, your organisational goals your frustrations to each other easily? Or is the pink elephant in the room way too often? Collaboration what is it and why is it a good idea to master this important skill?

Over the next 4 episodes we shed the light on collaboration, why it is an important skill, the common pitfalls in business collaborations and what kinds of collaborations are possible, just to get you thinking and explore what might be a good fit for you and your partners business.

Collaboration means working together to achieve a shared intention. It is important to not confuse this with teamwork, although it has similar traits the main difference is that in a collaboration model different people are involved and each bring something different to the party, there is no hierarchy as such, although I would recommend you decide who will lead the collaboration.

When we put different minds in a room it evokes a way of sharing knowledge, ideas, and resources. In this case in a partnership, we have all heard the saying 2 minds are better than 1.

Now that the scene is set let’s break down the types of collaboration, this will all depend on what outcomes you are looking to achieve. I have chosen two different models of collaboration

Open collaboration – allows internal and external participation, best suited to create or problem solve, often bigger groups and longer time frames Closed collaboration – Specific, smaller group of people involved can be used for problem solving or bringing new ideas to live

You have defined what collaboration is and you and your partner have set the base line, it’s now time to look at the workings/collaborations within your team looks like.

By now we have established the benefits for you and your partner and your team.

Collaboration is a great way to improve communication and morale. You can extend this further to retaining your talent (people like to be part of something), creating new ideas or simply making things better in your business.

By defining what type of collaboration fits your business, it avoids confusing within the team and allow you and your people to shine and thrive. Not every idea is a good idea, and that is a great outcome.

#6 Steps for Successful Collaboration

#1Identify the reason for collaboration, is it to solve a problem, bring new ideas, work on a project to fast track outcomes

#2Identify the type of collaboration, set the parameters from the start

#3 Who will be involved and why? Appoint someone who is responsible for keeping things on track, all are equal in a collaboration however keeping things on track is important

#4 Make sure you and your partner are on board and aligned as this will show confidence and trust for others who are part of the collaboration

#5 Call out poor collaboration and reward good collaboration

In Episode 38 You get what you accept we looked at the first idea for you to play with when it comes to non-commitment through observing language.

Isn’t it interesting what we can discover through this? What I want to look at next is now that we know what this looks like. What can you do about it? How can you and your partner communicate and ensure you pick up on when this takes place, and I don’t mean pointing it out or making one of you wrong. It is interesting how things are connected back to one thing, and this is what is the intent of this partnership and what goals do you have you want to achieve?

If you have suffered from non-commitment in your partnership and have identified this good on you.

Next I want to give you some insights on what you can do. Through my own research and years of working with clients I have discovered that it is often not that people are not willing to do something just because, there is many times an underlying reason as to why this might be the case.

When not addressed blame can slip in and cause havoc, misalignment, poor communication and definitely confusion . Commitment is about following through, being organised, it is a level of self-discipline and the good news is you can strengthen this muscle, first step is acknowledging and committing to whatever you have chosen.

I want to talk about how knowing how you make decisions can be the key to turning the ship around. There are 3 distinct styles of decision-making. Without a plan the risk of drifting apart and not staying aligned is what can end you up in murky waters. As the saying goes “you will end up somewhere but not necessarily reach the destination you desire.”

There are some unspoken parts you only find out about once you are in this partnership; it would be genius if we could map out the entire journey, which in a way we can identify. I will cover this off in a bit more depth in a future episode.

Often the highest intention of each partnership is the same to grow, start or exit a business together, however the idea of how to get there could be quite different.

In Business you have core values, they are like the compass of your business. It tells others how they are expected to behave, the promises you make to both internal and external clients, what you will accept, in short it is the fabric of your business.

On a personal level you will have your own set of values and beliefs. What is important to you and why? And do you know how to express this and make this known? It is where you will go when under pressure and being relaxed.

Let me take you through a quick process that is simple and super effective to get you started. As with everything in business there are many different layers we get to discover, things we get to find out about each partner and then it is the big question when it arrives how do we navigate?

List everything that is important to you both, write it down Look at the key words and then ask why is this important to you depending on how many values you are strongly connected to you might see some patterns across each of them Share them with each other

In good times and in bad times, I am sure you know this saying, this is the promise we make in marriage, does this apply to your Business partnership too? The answer is yes. Statistics show there are more split ups in Business partnerships than in marriages. These partnerships require special attention and loads of communication and clarity along the way in episode 1 you and I looked at the #1 killer being poor communication. In this final episode let’s look at the final piece that is often ignored or out of date. I have combined number 4 and 5 as they are relevant to each other, the lack of well-defined roles either outdated or non-existent which then flows into the perception of input and output of each partner.

Identify what each partner is good at and how this will fit into the business. Keep the role description up to date make it part of your communication to self and others Well defined role description will avoid the imbalance creeping in, you agree and commit and avoid those pesky perceptions

When in a Business Partnership we need a proper framework in terms of accountability and knowing what to do when you and your partner are not delivering.

Firstly we need to identify what accountability means to each partner and what is the best way to define this. This might be bit of a funny one, Are you a fighter, flighter or freezer, let me explain this. Each partner is unique and as such we need to understand who will be best fit for what and understanding what type of responses this can potentially create and how to address this. Once 1 and 2 is established now let’s determine how we will measure this accountability. We must make sure accountability is tied to something, last week I did use the saying “If you don’t know where you are going you will end up somewhere you might now want to be”. Truth Find a system that can keep score of what you are accountable for, eg. Financial, sales revenue, something that will reflect the outcomes achieved.

Develop a framework in which you can be honest and transparent. This is a non-negotiable. The first thing I look at when working with Dynamic Partnerships is how often they prioritize communicating and what do they communicate about. There are many different styles of partnerships. As a partnership you must be ok and trust each other that you can have any conversation no matter how challenging.

One of my favourite tools when things get a little bit heated is the above the line and below the line principal, it has saved many of my clients tonnes of time in wasting time on non-productive conversations. In short above the line is what moves us forward and below the line is what holds us back.

“Energy flows where attention goes” I love this saying and it rings so much truth. So is the attitude of gratitude, this is something that is easily forgotten when you are in business working and growing.

We have defined what leadership is so, then what is management? Management is about making things happen, accomplish the goals of an organisation and being in charge of holding people to account and governing the conduct within. What do leaders do? They create a vision and inspire, ensuring there is the ability, capacity and resources to create the desired outcomes. A leader follows through on their decisions. What are managers tasked with? They execute and measure the vision with the resources available to them. Because managers measure, they are super valuable and can assess where changes need to be made that would benefit the employee the most. Which one do we need in a partnership, back to my earlier story, it is not a competition both are important and are needed. There are some misunderstandings on each of them such as only people at the top are the leaders, this is not true you can find leaders across many different areas of your business each bringing their own unique styles and experiences to the table. There is no one style for effective leadership, in fact different situations will require different leadership. The 2 key ingredients they have is authenticity and self-awareness as well as a dose of resilience. As a leader you are required to drive towards success and manage the failures whilst keeping things progressing. A leader is not scared to be questioned and explore changes that might be needed. A common misconception is that only people that are born leaders can lead. Only certain people like those with big personalities and charisma can become leaders? Is this true? The answer is no. Leadership can be taught, and when I interviewed one of my guests Russell Wylie recently we actually discussed this. The two key ingredients for leadership are self-awareness and authenticity, so leadership with the right support, development and experience can certainly be developed. If we summarise it and break it down into a few key areas we can conclude the following:
