Travel to and from Indonesia is severely impacted by the war in Iran and this adds a variety of challenges to the trip. However, they are all surmountable and the trio make it to base camp with only one major drama. Carstensz Pyramid is the lowest of the seven summits at 4,884m and the climb to the top can be done in one push from base camp, but is heavily reliant on good weather.

Kenton takes us up the mountain with them, describing the equipment, the route, the weather and the views.

Lucy tells Kenton how she fell into triathlon after a drunken dare, and then became a pro-triathlete winning multiple races during her career. Since retiring from triathlon, she has entered her 'adventure era' which has seen her find a new love for ultra running. She won the Montane Winter Spine Race last year and set a FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the South West Coast Path in September.

Lucy is hugely passionate about the charity that she helped to set up, Move Against Cancer, and explains to Kenton why it means so much to her.

Lucy admits that some of the things she does are 'a bit bonkers' and we think you're going to love hearing about them.

Becoming a PT in 2011 helped Lee to overcome an eating disorder, alcohol addiction and depression, and she describes the feeling of standing on Everest as 'from rock bottom to the top of the world'. She trained for Everest in both the Alps and Ecuador, although her training was beset by a series of pitfalls and mistakes that she describes to Kenton.

If you have a dream to go to Everest, you are likely to find Lee's story highly relatable, and her enthusiasm will add an extra dose of motivation!

Aged 28, Jonny experienced a brain bleed and stroke which left him paralysed down one side. After two and a half years of intensive rehab, he was discharged and began to come to terms with his new normal. He has always loved skiing and was determined to continue if his body allowed him to.

Last year, he became the first disabled person to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole. A journey that took 46 days and required him to navigate crevasses, pull a sled and manage his body in an extreme environment.

Jonny talks in fascinating detail about all of his experiences, so tune in to find out more!

Tim loves all styles of climbing from alpine to sport, from ice to deep water solos. But he talks to Kenton today about something very special. He has very recently conquered the Era Vella climb in Spain, graded 9A, after 8 years of training to do so.

He explains his approach to this enormous challenge, from building strength, skill and endurance, to changing his diet and giving up alcohol. Tim went 'all in' to achieve his dream and to climbers and non-climbers alike, this is a truly compelling story.

Jenny talks to Kenton about her constant desire to find what is around the next corner, and her belief that to grow as humans, we need to push outside our comfort zones. She spends a lot of her time in remote, mountainous environments and some of her past adventures include traversing Kyrgyzstan, Morocco and the Bolivian Andes.

On this occasion, Kenton was keen to speak to David because he has recently returned from an expedition in Pakistan, where he finally achieved his dream of summiting 8,000m peak Nanga Parbat via the Rupal Face. David's perseverance shines through when we learn that this was his fifth attempt to climb the mountain, and climate conditions required lots of careful calculations to make safe progress up the steep slopes. His descent, however, was much quicker! David spent 35 glorious minutes paragliding from slightly below the summit all the way to Basecamp and as listeners, we share his joy in the journey.

Kenton speaks to University of Leeds based Professor of Glaciology, Duncan Quincey, about his current research project on the Khumbu glacier. Whilst Kenton was climbing Everest, Duncan and his team were installing some impressive, solar-powered equipment at Camp 2 to monitor changing glacial temperatures over the coming months.

In this episode, Duncan explains his hypothesis to Kenton and talks about the early data they are collecting. Hem used to run only because he had to, for fitness tests and PT sessions, but in 2019 he tried his local park run (5km) and loved it. Out of curiosity, he gradually built up his distances, moved from road to trail, and developed his confidence. He tells Kenton that he has completed several 100 milers, the Winter Spine race (twice!), UTMB and the Bob Graham Round, to name a few.

Melissa didn't finish the race and has taken a lot of learnings from her unfortunate DNF. She continued for far longer than many of us would believe possible yet still struggled to process her 'failure' for several weeks afterwards.

Sequoia started her business at 17 years old after an 'unstable' childhood that she discusses with Kenton. After nearly 20 years, she has now taken herself back to school and is fully embracing the Global Executive Leadership course at Yale, sharing her own experiences of running a company with her peers and learning a huge amount from each of them too.

Benny is a product developer by trade, but gave it up for a life in the mountains back in 2016. He moved to Alaska and lived for several years in his car before being able to afford an apartment, but he has now found his niche and is a full-time mountain guide. Anna's story is a remarkable one: she tells Kenton how she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome at the peak of her career and had to overcome huge challenges to get back to the top of her sport.

Since retiring from racing in 2008, Anna has built a successful career as a keynote speaker, leadership coach and training consultant supporting organisations to develop high-performing teams and achieve their goals.

James has worked for brands such as Innocent, Uber and Vinted and he shares some fascinating insights into their cultures and his experiences with these organisations. He talks about 'hustle', 'toe-stepping' and 'teetering on the edge of the red' amongst other things.

Anna took three months leave from her day job and careered head first into this awe-inspiring challenge. She climbed mountains in all weathers, many of them on her own, and she clocked some very long days. At the end of the challenge she covered 155km and 11,000m of ascent in three days!

Anna is super passionate about being in the mountains and she and Kenton really hit it off in this episode!

Allie's story is not straight-forward. From the age of 14, she battled with addiction to alcohol, she was severely depressed, and she suffered numerous mental health crises. She started running in the midst of her addiction and completed many marathons and ultra-marathons whilst hungover or under the influence. This only served to strengthen her conviction that she didn't have a problem because she was a runner.

After climbing Pen-Y-Fan in Wales with photographer and community champion Dan James, we utilised the time on the drive home to interview this special individual.

Today, Dan follows the path of ‘what feels best’ in the moment, pursuing what his heart tells him rather than what society deems best. What would appear to most as a carefree journey through life, actually means Dan is closer to those around him, generating bonds that have meaning and purpose.

But it wasn’t always like this. Dan tells me about his time in the Royal Air Force working as a bomb disposal expert before a freak accident cut short his career and how this in turn helped him understand what’s important to him.

Rob appears to have found the sweet spot as well as being confident to move his family overseas for a prolonged period of time in order to educate the children beyond the normal, as well as to win all the local ultra-races as the unknown Brit.

So what changed? Simple. A trip to Nepal in 1998, where she fell in love with the mountains and started high-altitude climbing. Since then, she has scaled six of the 14 8,000m-peaks, namely Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Manaslu (fore summit) and Broad Peak – the latter three she summited without the help of supplemental oxygen. In 2004, Billi started assisting the late Elizabeth Hawley with her work documenting expeditions to the Nepal Himalayas. Together with a team, Billi continues to interview expedition leaders for Liz Hawley's archive, which is now called 'The Himalayan Database'.

When she is not gallivanting around the high Himalayas or chasing expeditions in Kathmandu, Billi works for Swiss Humanitarian Aid as a communications expert, writes mountaineering articles for German and English-speaking magazines, translates or writes books and leads mountain treks and expeditions in Nepal and around the world. In short, she's a busy person, which makes the time she spent with Kenton recording this podcast all the more valuable.
