The music created by communes that embraced peace, love, and individual freedom had a powerful impact. It was like a fast, intense collision between a 16 rpm mecha-messiah and the future. Bandola connects the artistic lineage that runs through Baby Grandmothers, Mecki Mark Men, Pärson Sound, International Harvester, and Träd, Gräs & Stenar, showing the origins of the Stoner Rock scene.

Since the early 1970's saxophonist Evan Parker has been pushing the frontiers of jazz and performance to ever expanding degrees, and is rightly hailed as one of the most influential ambassadors of free jazz. Whether in concert as a soloist, or in any of his myriad collaborations, Parker continues to captivate music fans, all around the world, decade after decade. Multi-instrumentalist Valentin Clastrier moved on from classical guitar and chorale music when in 1970, he became enthralled by the mediaeval resonance of the hurdy gurdy. He quickly gained acclaim as a unique player, and by 1987 he had invented a new model hurdy gurdy - altering from a mere 6 strings to 32 strings, and thereafter moving further into sheer experimentation. It's a tone landscape like no other.

This incredible event is a collaboration between, Free Range, the Gulbenkian Arts Centre and the world-renowned Hurdy-Gurdy maker Claire Dugue.

This episode quietly listens to just a handful of Ukrainian artist. I don’t have anything to say, I just want to remember that through music we are able to witness the most beautiful and unexplainable parts of humanity.

With this special, Bandola hopes to give a small but measured insight into how the "beatnik" reverberations play on, from the late 1950's until this present day. Don't be a square.....
