The Layman's Law School podcast is going back in time to break down Detroit's most embarrassing police operation!

What happens when two different police units target the exact same house on the exact same night... and neither knows the other is there?

In this episode, we break down one of the strangest law enforcement failures you'll ever hear about. In November 2017, Detroit Police officers from neighboring precincts unknowingly converged on the same home during separate narcotics operations. One team had a valid search warrant. The other was conducting an undercover "push off" operation. What followed was confusion, shouting, drawn weapons, and eventually officers fighting other officers while an innocent homeowner watched from the sidelines.

Join Chace, Reid, Shawn, and Lindsey as the discuss the Facts, the Law and What this could mean if it happened to you! A few things that we touched on in this episode:

⚖️ How search warrants and undercover operations are supposed to work

⚖️ What legal obligations exist for police coordination and communication

⚖️ Whether officers can be held liable for using force against other officers they don't recognize

⚖️ The rights of an innocent homeowner caught in the middle

⚖️ What happens to an underlying criminal investigation when an operation completely falls apart

This case raises fascinating questions about civil rights, police accountability, use of force, and what happens when system failures create dangerous situations that could have ended in tragedy.

Tiger Woods arrested for DUI… but with a 0.00 breathalyzer?

In this podcast episode of Layman’s Law School, we break down the real legal issues behind the latest allegations involving Tiger Woods and explain how you can still be charged with DUI even when alcohol isn’t involved.

We walk through the facts of the case, the bodycam footage, and the charges stemming from a crash in Jupiter, Florida. Then we dig into the law: what counts as “impairment,” how prescription drugs factor into DUI cases, and what prosecutors can (and can’t) access from your private medical records.

We also answer the practical questions:

– Should you ever take a field sobriety test?

– What happens if you refuse a chemical test?

– Can your past DUI be used against you?

– Why would someone go to rehab if they’re pleading not guilty?

Whether you’re following the Tiger Woods case or just want to understand your rights, this episode breaks it all down in plain English.

Tell us in the comments what YOU thought about Woods' latest legal troubles.

Welcome back to the Layman's Law School podcast — and this episode is a little different.

It’s Lindsey’s birthday, which means she’s in charge (which honestly isn't much different than most episodes!) But this time, the guys had no idea what was coming… and that’s how we ended up with Lindsey’s Birthday Bar Exam.

In this episode, the attorneys go head-to-head through 3 rounds:

Lawsuits Gone Wild

Legal Myths: Fact or Fiction

Dumb Criminals

We break down the $67 million pants lawsuit, the Red Bull “gives you wings” case, and the real story behind the McDonald’s hot coffee case. Then we tackle legal myths about Miranda rights, undercover cops, self-defense, and more — before finishing with some truly unbelievable criminal stories.

This one is funny, competitive, and chaotic… but it also has a serious point:

a lot of what people think they know about the law is flat wrong.

If you enjoy the episode, like, subscribe, and drop a comment with a case, myth, or legal topic you want us to cover next.

03:05 The $67 Million Pants lawsuit

06:15 Red Bull “Gives You Wings” lawsuit

10:35 The real McDonald’s hot coffee case

18:20 Round 2: Legal Myths – Fact or Fiction

18:45 Do undercover cops have to tell you they’re cops?

20:20 If cops don’t read Miranda, is the case thrown out?

23:20 Can you shoot someone who breaks into your house?

27:30 Do you only get one phone call when arrested?

31:10 Round 3: Dumb Criminals

📌 CORRECTIONS & CLARIFICATIONS:

In this podcast episode, we discussed the facts of K.G.M. v. Meta & Google, which is a California STATE court trial in Los Angeles — not a federal case. During our legal discussion, some of our procedural commentary (motion to dismiss stage, summary judgment still to come) actually applies to the separate federal multidistrict litigation in Oakland, CA, which is still in pre-trial stages. By our air date, the K.G.M. state trial was already underway with opening statements and witness testimony.

A few additional corrections:

K.G.M. began using YouTube at age 6 and Instagram around age 9 (we stated age 10)

Opening statements began the week of Feb. 9, 2026 — not Jan. 27 (that was jury selection/TikTok settlement)

40+ state attorneys general have filed suit against Meta (we stated 33)

The core of our discussion — the product liability theory, Section 230 workaround, internal Meta documents, TikTok/Snapchat settlements, and the Big Tobacco parallels — remains accurate. Multiple overlapping cases are happening in 2026 and some details got crossed.

Video Chapters

0:00 – Welcome to Lay Man’s Law School (trial attorneys from Georgia)

0:15 – Friday cheers + “heart out” intro banter

1:18 – “Stand Up to a Bully Day” + why this topic matters

1:32 – The big question: should Big Tech be liable for harm to kids?

2:32 – The case: KGM v. Meta & Google (anonymous plaintiff)

2:50 – Allegations: addiction-by-design, depression/anxiety, body dysmorphia

3:02 – Sextortion + explicit content claims (Instagram/Snapchat)

3:39 – Internal Meta emails: “Instagram is a drug… we’re pushers”

4:34 – Legal problem: third-party content vs platform responsibility

5:18 – When addiction-by-design becomes “product” behavior

6:15 – What Meta allegedly knew: teen body image + dopamine targeting

6:47 – The Big Tobacco analogy (profits vs safety)

7:41 – Psych & neuroscience: engineered dopamine loops

8:22 – Mental health stats spike (2010–2020) + why timing matters

9:17 – “It’s free” but still monetized: ads as the business model

10:25 – Phone company analogy: is this just like prank calls?

11:16 – Why it’s different: intentional addiction mechanics

12:04 – Gaming/gambling parallels + rising depression trends

13:05 – Jonathan Haidt: 4 harms (social, sleep, attention, addiction response)

14:33 – Where the case really is: early stages, not “trial win” yet

16:00 – TikTok & Snapchat settlements vs Meta/Google fighting

16:53 – Big Tobacco parallel: small players settle, big players gamble

17:11 – Zuckerberg “FaceMash” origin story + intent argument

18:45 – How society regulates new inventions (cars/seat belts analogy)

20:25 – Personal algorithm example + why kids can’t self-regulate

21:27 – Warnings, age limits, and caregiver responsibility

23:31 – Age restriction loopholes + “we’re not fixing it” allegations

24:29 – Practical barrier: what verification actually works? (ID, biometrics?)

27:20 – Section 230 explained in plain English

29:48 – The key strategy: product liability (design), not user content

30:34 – What “motion to dismiss” means (plausibility vs proof)

31:28 – The justice/value angle: culture must protect vulnerable groups

34:05 – Takeaway for families: don’t let 10-year-olds on social media

36:31 – If you could legislate today… what would you do?

38:05 – Parallels to porn ID laws + why the law lags tech

39:36 – Hypothetical: if this were a drug, lawsuits would explode

41:41 – “Intentionality” is the whole case

43:22 – Final takeaways + reminder: summary judgment is next

45:04 – Next episode tease: birthday surprise

Brian Kohberger pled guilty on July 2, 2025, avoiding the death penalty in the murders of four University of Idaho students. He received four consecutive life sentences plus 10 years—and gave up all rights to appeal. No motive was ever revealed.

Families reacted with outrage. The Goncalves and Kernodle families wanted the death penalty. The Chapins, once calling for “an eye for an eye,” accepted the deal but said, “This ain’t justice. No judge presided, no jury weighed the truth.”

At sentencing, the surviving roommate spoke, families gave emotional impact statements, and Kohberger stayed silent. The judge declared him “forever removed from civilized society.”

Now, Kohberger faces life in general population—working 40–60 hours a week, no protective custody. One prison expert put it bluntly: “The convicts are going to eat him up.”

A plea deal, no closure—was justice really served?

🔹 The bombshell RICO and sex trafficking charges against Sean "Diddy" Combs — What witnesses revealed and how the feds are building the case.

🔹 The final verdict in the Karen Read trial — What the jury decided, and why some believe justice still hasn't been served for Officer John O'Keefe. (Note: this episode was recorded on June 13, 2025 and as of publishing time, the Karen Read trial is now over. This episode reveals our predictions prior to Karen Read's acquittal.)

This week on Layman's Law School, things heat up in the Karen Read case as the retrial gets underway-and it's already explosive. Our Georgia lawyers and resident "Laywoman" break down:

🟥 Officer Michael Proctor officially FIRED

🟥 What this means for the retrial & how the defense will use it

🟥 The alternate juror from the first trial who is now on Karen Read's legal team

🟥 The public perception war and trial strategy ahead

Chace Hawk, Reid Sanders, and Shawn Merzlak from the Hawk Law Group in Augusta Georgia talk about the best things that you can do when you're pulled over by a police officer. Using footage from FlexYourRights.org, they break down the DOs and DON'Ts of what to do when you're pulled over.

One topic that they focus heavily on is the difference between the letter of the law and how those laws are implemented, where some cities and states may have laws allowing or disallowing certain behavior at a traffic stop, but unless you know how judges have recently interpreted those laws, you shouldn't put yourself at risk just to prove a point.

Additionally, they talk about how to properly respond to a search request, show examples of how body language makes a difference, and Shawn - the former police officer - speaks from the officer's perspective to give you an idea of what they're thinking when they pull you over.

Do you agree or disagree with their advice? Know any "1st Amendment flexers" that like to try to make a point? In their opinions, the best place to WIN or LOSE the ticket, is NOT on the streets, but in the courtroom.

Then, we hit the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial. We start with the overall issues and then break down a clip of a cross-examination, showing what some attorneys did right...and where some may have made crucial mistakes.
