Lost Dogs of America is a group of volunteers who saw the need to provide no cost resources to the owners of lost dogs to increase the chances of locating and being successfully reunited with their dog.

Lost Dogs of America provides education for dog owners on preventing the loss of their dog. The program also benefits local animal control and shelters by decreasing the number of “owned strays” entering the animal control/shelter system and increasing the chances of finding an owner once the dog is in their care. The personal touch their volunteers provide sets them apart from other automated lost and found pet services. Lost Dogs of America has a state-run group in almost every state in the US.

Kathy Pobloskie, Co-Founder/Director of Lost Dogs of America and Director/Founder of Lost Dogs of Wisconsin joins us every month. Kathy founded Lost Dogs of Wisconsin in 2009 and co-founded Lost Dogs of America in 2012.

Lori Briggs has been helping owners get their lost pets back home for the last 17 years. Originally from the Detroit, Michigan area, Lori now lives in the Cape Coral, FL area. Lori retired from the Detroit Police Department as a crime scene investigator after 24 years. She has successfully recovered over 1,100 lost pets and reunited them with their owners. When a pet goes missing, Lor works one-on-one with the pet owners providing them with tips and advice on what to do and what not to do to help get their pet home safely. A Fighting Chance Foundation has been helping Virginia animals in need since June 2020. They are a charitable, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization based in Northern Virginia with the goal of making pet care affordable for Virginia families by subsidizing a portion of emergency or life-saving medical care for animals whose guardians do not have the necessary financial resources. Their mission is to support critical care for ill pets of the elderly, disabled and those whose total household income does not exceed the current Federal poverty guidelines. The Foundation aims to keep our animal companions healthy, happy and in their homes with the families who love them. Started by three Northern Virginia residents, Amy LaVigna, Laurie Judd and Kristine DeJarnette, the Foundation has helped approximately 90 dogs and cats receive prompt, veterinary care that sometimes supports a more comfortable life, and other times saves a life. Hoping to one day expand to a national charity, the Foundation runs on 100% volunteer work and Board member donation. Long-time animal advocate, Amy LaVigna, has rescued several dogs with major health issues over the years. The cost of proper veterinary care for cancers, injuries and disease can be exorbitant for anyone. Amy found herself in and out of emergency vets paying high costs to ensure her dogs received treatment and surgeries. Realizing how inaccessible vet care is for those who already struggle with day-to-day bills, A Fighting Chance Foundation was formed. They provide hope and help to pet owners in their most difficult times. Now in their third year, the Board of Directors is looking to expand their reach and connect with donors who also know that any donation, no matter how big or small, can make a real difference, a direct impact on dogs and cats in pain or facing life- threatening issues.

As part of Mutual Rescues "Senior Saving Seniors" theme, Mutual Rescue was able to tell the story of NMDOG's resourceful Home Sanctuary Program which brightens the lives of seniors while helping to provide loving homes for senior rescue dogs. All Pack Animalesque; is the first in this series.

Finnegan Dowling is the Shelter Program and Social Media Manager for Mutual Rescue, a national initiative of Humane Society Silicon Valley that encourages people to engage with their local shelters.

NMDOG serves chained and forgotten dogs in New Mexico. Headquartered out of Albuquerque, NM, this small, 501(c)3 100% nonprofit foster-based rescue was established in 2010, touching the lives of thousands of dogs ever since. NMDOG has been in the forefront of efforts to expand anti-tethering ordinances throughout New Mexico and has been a key component in multiple high-profile cruelty cases across the state.

Angela Stell founded NMDOG in 2010 after becoming aware of the lack of options for the chained, neglected and abused dogs in the state.

Angela has been recognized as 2013 New Mexico Humane Animal Advocate Of The Year and won the exceptional volunteer service at the 2017 National Animal Care and Control Association conference. The "Shining World Compassion Award" was bestowed upon Angela by Supreme Master Ching Hai in 2021. NMDOG has been awarded countless local honors such as "Best Non Profit", "Best Place to Adopt a Dog", "Best Pet Rescue", and more! In 2012, NMDOG and the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department formed Bernalillo County Animal Cruelty Task Force, the first Animal Cruelty Task Force of its kind. She shares her home in Albuquerque with her beloved dogs Mesa Rain, Sparrow, Roan, Astro, and Honor, as well as the foster dogs NMDOG is preparing for adoption.

Marleen is a leading expert in the area of animal disaster recovery and has led numerous efforts to save animals during these events. The operations include the proactive evacuation of animals in advance of danger, finding suitable interim or permanent housing and reuniting animals and their owners once the disaster has passed. Working with various organizations (e.g. Cajun Navy) and leveraging her extensive network, Marleen has been able to help thousands of animals in the path of hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and flooding. In 2019 she was recognized with the Women in Animal Welfare Award for the State of North Carolina. She moved to Edmonton with her husband at the beginning of the pandemic and is the proud mom of two pug babies. She currently volunteers with the Edmonton Humane Society and the Humane Society of Charlotte. Before embracing her passion for volunteering, Marleen worked as a Systems librarian at Stanford University.

Chris Roy is a technology guy in his "day" job and used his experience to create Doobert.com which is an online software platform custom-built for animal rescuers. It's like a combination of Match.com specifically for animal shelters and rescues to find new partners, and then a volunteer Uber for getting the animals where they need to go.

Chris's latest revolution is Doobert Forward where pet parents can buy the same food and other products for their pets, and Doobert will donate 5% of their order to their selected animal rescue or shelter organization.

Chris is always helping provide technology solutions to some of the biggest challenges in animal rescue He is always looking for new ways to help animals and the people that care for them. Chris lives up in the Green Bay Wisconsin area.

Kaelin Rains is the Shelter Admissions Coordinator at IndyHumane, a nonprofit humane society located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her focus in the role is not only to manage the shelter’s population, but also maintaining people and pet relationships by offering resources to those in need as well as reuniting lost pets with their owners.

Kaelin has worked in animal welfare in Indianapolis since 2017 starting at Indianapolis Animal Care Services - Indiana’s largest municipal animal shelter. She has worked in many areas of animal welfare including TNR, Foster Coordination, kennel management, and medical departments originally starting as a veterinary technician. In her free time, Kaelin enjoys relaxing at home with her dog Reggie and her cat Eve or going bowling.

So many pets could be saved and returned to their owner if they are microchipped and those chips are kept updated. It's such a simple process but sometimes feels overwhelming and confusing to owners. Jeanette Garlow volunteers as the co-Director of Lost Dogs Illinois and with Microchip Help. The Microchip Help organization are volunteers who work in collaboration with Lost Dogs of America and PetFBI to help reunite lost pets across the nation.

Microchip Help recently has had some very special stories and we wanted to share them to help explore the need for microchipping and how they helped reunite families with their beloved pets.

David Shade is a CEO, Entrepreneur, Combat Veteran, Paratrooper, Purple Heart Recipient, and Professional Certified Dog Trainer. After returning home from Afghanistan in 2008, he got his first dog, a female boxer named Lulu. David was then diagnosed with PTS (Post Traumatic Stress) and found that Lulu, like all dogs, have the power to heal us through companionship.

David then decided to dedicate his life to training dogs and coaching families to replicate the emotional bond that he had with Lulu. Recently, many owners of lost pets are receiving texts and phone calls from found pet scammers trying to take advantage of them when they are most vulnerable. There are several different scams going on right now. One specific scam is the Google Voice Scam. We will get into the methods these scammers are using to try to coerce pet owners into giving them money when they believe their pet has been found.

Where is “Z” – Dog Goes Missing from Rover Sitter with NIA MORGAN

This is a story of a dog named “Z” who disappeared from a pet sitter hired through the Rover app. Nia Morgan is the dog's owner. “Z” is a one-year-old doodle-mix. Nia is 24 young woman who lives in Chicago, IL and has owned “Z” since he was 8 weeks old.

For the past two and a half months, Nia and her dog have been separated.

On March 18, Nia dropped off her puppy in Chicago at a pet sitter who was supposed to be pre-vetted by Rover. One hour later, without Nia’s knowledge, the sitter drove the pup an hour away to Waukegan, IL where he immediately got loose.

For the next five days, the sitter provided false updates on the pup’s well-being. The night before Nia was scheduled to pick-up her pup, the sitter said the dog had just gone missing. When Nia returned, she uncovered the sitter's ongoing lie; he had been missing since the morning Nia dropped him off.

Throughout the past couple months, Nia and her family and friends have been doing everything in their power to get the word out about her pup. They’re working with the Waukegan Animal Control, a humane investigator, postering the surrounding neighborhoods, have hired drones, and are sharing his story all across social media.

Z is an energetic, smart and curious pup who enjoys long walks, play time with dog friends and his inner circle of friends and family. He’s shy at first, but once he opens up he is the most loving dog in the world. Nia is a dedicated dog mom who does everything with her pup. Nia is dedicated to finding her dog and safely bringing him home. She will not stop until he’s back in her arms, surrounded by his friends and family.

A year ago Octavia, the 3 year old Border Collie, busted through a front porch glass window and started her 91 day journey through Wisconsin. Finding Octavia was no easy task. Octavia was chased out of the area (by well meaning searchers), with no further sightings. Today we will go over Octavia’s story and it will help teach us about lost dog behavior and how one person made it her mission to bring her home safe along with some of the dedicated volunteers from Lost Dogs of Wisconsin.

On April 23, 2014, Lost Dogs of America created and launched the first National Lost Dog Awareness Day (NLDAD), a day designed to bring attention to all dogs that are lost each year, while also celebrating the thousands of lost dogs successfully reunited with their families.

The tenacious efforts of the combined states’ volunteers efforts, along with over 700,000 fans have helped reunite over 150,000 dogs since 2011. Getting lost dogs back home reduces stress on owners, staff at shelters/animal control facilities, other dogs in the facilities, and ultimately saves taxpayers’ money. It also opens up kennel space for truly homeless dogs.

How does a small nonprofit with a handful of full-time volunteers help 87 sick, injured pets in need and fund almost $30,000 in medical care in one year? Thanks to the continued support of our donors and a generous grant awarded to them by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County (CFSC) they are able to do just that. The CFSC Animal Welfare Grant funded by the Robert Parker Foundation has allowed Lost Pet Services to offer medical care, microchips and ID tags to pets and their families in our community as well as a donation of a microchip scanner to the local Parrish Fire Station to help with scanning of found pets after hours. Here are some of the stories of those pets and families we were able to help and some tips on how you can start to help in your community if you’re interested in starting a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

LEADSRQ’s is a nonprofit organization that started in May 2017 in Sarasota FL when five volunteers (3 teachers, a lawyer and a nurse) got together to do more for the pets in the Sarasota County shelter. Their main purpose is to provide funds for animals in local shelters and rescues that need behavioral or medical support so that animals can get into homes and stay in their homes. LEADSRQ uses 100% of their donations to enhance the lives of animals. They have no overhead expenses and are 100% volunteer. Andrea Inman is a lifelong animal lover and pet sitter. She has worked in volunteer and kennel management for the past 5 years at a Florida nonprofit that trains guide and service dogs for the visually impaired and veteran’s with disabilities - which relies upon about 300 weekly volunteers coming to their facility. Volunteering is an important part of her life since childhood, and when she can, she volunteers with local environmental groups for beach clean-ups, allowing her to see both sides of the coin. She is certified by Volunteer Florida for excellence in volunteer management, and has attended the global volunteer conference put on by Points of Light to continue her education. Andrea’s passions lie in building proper infrastructure for a successful volunteer program, volunteer appreciation and recognition, and coaching for success. In her career she has helped launch a better pre-screening process for the organization, a training program for incoming volunteers, continuing education opportunities for volunteers, built a group volunteer program, and a successful ambassador speaker program.

Andrea recently joined the Farmhouse Animal & Nature Sanctuary (FANS) volunteer family and helps to feed and clean every weekend, and is assisting the organization with building upon their current volunteer program. Jon Dibernardo, an Army Veteran, spent 28 years with the USPS before retiring in 2014. Cora is a college professor working on her PhD in Psychology. She is certified in pet psychology, human psychology, and child psychology along with pet first aid, pet nutrition, animal reiki, and she is working on her FEMA animal disaster management certification.

Cora started her college career in archaeology and has worked with many Native American groups on cultural preservation and social and environment justice issues. Animals and nature have always been her first loves.

Her mission with Faeryland’s Farm is to provide a safe space for animals, humans, and nature to heal because she believes that in this chaotic world, love and positivity wins because the animals prove it so. Cora claims to have no special powers or gifts because the animals are the ones that provide all the love and healing while she just speaks human. She acts as their conduit. The health, happiness, safety, and well-being of the animals is top priority and Cora has worked very hard in her life to achieve her goal of having an animal sanctuary to provide that safe space for learning and healing.

In addition to 11 goats, the farm has 3 cats, 4 rabbits, 2 dogs, one of which is 18, 2 turtles, fish, ducks, chickens, guineas, one donkey, and one husband in addition to the numerous wildlife that frequents the area.

Faeryland’s Farm is a concept grown from Cora’s love of animals and nature. Consciousness exists in everything, and the farm is a magical place that helps to shape the human-nature bond.

Cora has traveled across the United States camping and hiking with her dog Little Bear that is now 18 years old. Little Bear has been an archaeologist, documentarian, Indian Activist, and wander and world traveler. Cora got her first goat about 8 year ago on a ranch out in the

Mohave Desert named Baby that was her bottle baby who tragically died about the age of two years old. However, Baby’s legacy lives on and she was the inspiration.

In addition to her therapy and educational work with the animals, Cora teaches a wide range of subjects from anthropology to history to psychology and cultural studies. Her PhD focus is mindfulness and how animals and nature enhance our mindfulness practices. Cora loves her animals dearly and cannot imagine life without them, as she has worked very hard in her life to have them. She believes that goats are great therapy animals because each one has its own unique personality and they just seem to have an inner knowing of what people need. Cora loves all the animals very dearly, and she does have a main therapy goat named Chocolate (pronounced Shock-o-lot); Chocolate’s therapy goat is Patience, and it is not uncommon to see the three of them together walking around the farm or in the truck along with Max the lab puppy.

Katie was certified as a Missing Pet Recovery Specialist in 2016 through what is now Missing Animal Response Network. She has been working with owners of missing cats and dogs in Colorado and remotely in other areas since that time and recently moved to Oregon. She creates search plans for owners of missing dogs and cats, and helps on the ground with humane trapping when needed.

When the Oregon wildfires exploded in early September of this year, she found a team that welcomed her help in rescuing animals in the burn zone. She traveled between her home in Bend to Springfield to help on the Holiday Farm Fire several times, and made the trip to southern Oregon to help on the Almeda Fire near Medford twice to train with Shannon Jay, a well know "fire cat" rescuer and to help on the ground. She has a cat detection dog, a beagle/dachshund mix named Franklin, who helped recover a cat in a big dark home the owners couldn't return to, helping rescuers get the cat safely and quickly, and later used him to help find some deceased cats in burn zones, giving the owners closure. Katie is also a volunteer Microchip Hunter with Lost Dogs of America and uses her skills to help reunite found animals with their owners whenever possible.

On today’s show, Jodi will share practical steps of dealing and coping with the loss of a beloved pet and how to find peace in whatever stage of grief you are in. Loss of a pet due to death or when it goes missing, can cause intense feelings of guilt. Jodi will discuss ways of navigating this loss and how to start to heal.

After working briefly in the mental health field, Jodi decided to move into the care of pets. For the past 20 plus years, she has owned and operated a family run pet care business in, both Westchester and Fairfield Counties. Through the years, she has learned how to take care of special needs, elderly, and sick pets of all kinds. She has also experienced the devastation and sadness both personally as well as professionally, when our pets leave this world. This experience led her to become a pet bereavement counselor.

She graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield CT in 1993, with honors, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fairfield University.

In 2016, she became certified as a Pet Bereavement Counselor by Dr. Wallace Sife, the founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB). In September of 2018, she started working towards her certification as an Animal Chaplain, under the direction of Joe Dwyer.

The good news: The found pet turned into your shelter, animal control facility or vet clinic has been scanned and he has a microchip!

The bad news: The microchip reaches a dead end. Either it was never enrolled by the shelter, rescue, vet clinic or owner or it was not updated with current contact information.

But there’s still hope! Lost Dogs of America and Helping Lost Pets have joined forces to provide a FREE service to help. Marilyn Litt of Lost Dog of Texas has been instrumental in starting and managing this team of trained volunteers who are willing to help track down those dead-end chips. They have successfully tracked down hundreds of owners of dead-end microchips. Sometimes they are even able to track down the owner when the chip is unregistered.

The surprising popularity of CBD products for pets has led to an alarming number of pet poisonings. Dr. Dave from the Sarasota Veterinary Center will be talking with us today about why treating your pets with CBD can be a risky proposition. There currently is no regulation of these supplements to ensure what you are buying is what the label says it is. If the products contain any THC, it can be toxic to your pets. Pet owners need to understand that if they want to try CBD products, they need to know they are not regulated, and you must proceed at your own risk and the risk it may cause to your pets.

Microchips are very important tools in helping reunite lost pets with their owners but every day we see cases where people scanning chips do not know how to look them up. We are told the chips are unregistered and they aren’t. We are told there isn’t a chip and there is. There are so many cracks in the microchip system that we hope to share some very important information about the problems. Several years ago, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), a leading proponent of microchipping, began a non-branded online “pet look up service.” By entering a microchip number on the AAHA look-up site, individuals have the best chance of locating who the chip is registered to. We will talk about 900 microchips and how these chips are very possibly never registered or registries kept for pets with these chips.

HELPING THE PETS OF THE HOMELESS - RHONDA ELDRIDGE

In June 2018, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) charitable organization called The Community Pet Project was formed serving Hillsborough County, Florida. Many local rescue volunteers were frequently encountering homeless and at-risk people who were desperately trying to care for their pets. For many of these people, their pets were their only reason to keep moving forward and survive the despair of their current situations. Without the help of the Community Pet Project, many of these pets would have to be surrendered to local shelters. The Community Pet Project volunteers work to help these people keep and care for their pets.

Quarterly community outreach events are held with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and the Tampa Police Department to provide homeless and at-risk families pet food and pet supplies such as flea prevention, wormer, grooming supplies, treats, and toys. as well as information regarding veterinary care and spay and neuter surgeries. Financial contributions and product donations are greatly appreciated and always needed.

TIFF (To Inform Families First) was founded by Christine Olson, the mother of Tiffiany, a young woman killed in a traffic accident in 2005. Christine did not learn of this tragedy until 6 and a half hours after the accident happened.

Reflecting on Tiffiany’s accident and the agony it caused inspired Christine to ensure other families never need suffer the same situation. Christine dedicated her efforts to design an emergency contact database system that would allow law enforcement officers to instantly retrieve information needed to notify loved ones upon an emergency.

With the support of then Florida State Representative Bill Galvano (currently president of the Florida Senate), The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, and law enforcement agencies, a voluntary Emergency Contact Information program went into effect on October 2, 2006 in the state of Florida.

This Emergency Contact Information program is a highly effective way to enhance the lives of people, by providing contact information to law enforcement officers during critical emergencies, when every second counts.

The TIFF initiative is highly recognized outside the State of Florida and has received several awards. The Ash Institute at Harvard voted the ECI program one of the top 50 best government innovations.

Christine has recently undertaken a new initiative as part of TIFF. She is currently working on adding an emergency contact section to TIFF’s initiative to have contact information available for pet caregivers in the event of a medical emergency or accident so pets are taken care of.

Born in Milwaukee, WI Christine moved to Bradenton, FL in August, 2000 and has worked at the Rod and Reel Pier for the last nine years. She served on the board of directors for the Children's Memorial and Gardens, and volunteered at the Mote Marine Aquarium and Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch.
