Liz Booker @LiteraryAviatrix talks with fellow retired Coast Guard helicopter pilot Darcy Guyant @dolph_and_gwen about his picture book, Into the Storm: The Coast Guard Adventures of Dolph and Gwen. Darcy started his aviation career in the US Army and transitioned to the Coast Guard, which hires about a third of its pilots from other services through their Direct Commission Aviator program. In retirement, Darcy has become a beloved volunteer at his local elementary school, where the teachers encouraged him to write a book for young readers. The result is a picture book inspired by a search and rescue case he flew on during his active duty time, with a twist intended for his granddaughter: female pilot Gwen at the controls of her eager helicopter Dolph. They and their crew combine leadership, teamwork, and courage to help rescue the fishermen in distress, and show young people they can make a difference in the world.

Author, retired Air Force Colonel, former flight test engineer, and Executive Director of the Air Force Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, California, Eileen Bjorkman, talks about her new book, FLY GIRLS REVOLT: THE STORY OF THE WOMEN WHO KICKED OPEN THE DOOR TO FLY IN COMBAT. Eileen weaves her own experience as an Air Force flight test engineer in this history that, uniquely among books that follow the history of women in military aviation, bridges the gap between the WASP and the first active duty female aviators in the 1970s with the stories of the women who served in other roles in between. She also includes a detailed account of the Women Military Aviators’ (WMA) spectacular show of solidarity at a DACOWITZ hearing on changes in the Air Force’s flight training policy that threatened to further restrict women’s ability to progress professionally in the ranks. This book brings us new and complementary information on this incredibly important transition for women in military aviation, and features several outstanding and notable pioneers, not the least of whom is currently the Air Force Chief of Safety, Maj. General Jeannie Leavitt.

In this interview Liz talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Beverly Weintraub, about her book Wings of Gold: The Story of the First Women Naval Aviators.

On Feb. 2, 2019, the skies over Maynardville, Tennessee, filled with the roar of four F/A-18F Super Hornets streaking overhead in close formation. In each aircraft were two young female flyers, executing the first all-woman Missing Man Formation flyover in Navy history in memory of Captain Rosemary Mariner — groundbreaking Navy jet pilot, inspiring commander, determined and dedicated leader — whose drive to ensure the United States military had its choice of the best America had to offer, both men and women, broke down barriers and opened doors for female aviators wanting to serve their country.

In this interview Liz talks with retired Air Force Colonel and airline pilot, Julie Tizard, about her flying careers and her book, The Road to Wings, a lesbian romance novel set in Air Force Flight Training in the early 1990s, which incorporates the intensity of military flight training from both the student's and instructor’s perspectives and the high stakes of same-sex relationships in the military at the time.

What does it take to earn air force wings? Your heart, your soul, even your very life? Lieutenant Casey Tompkins is starting the most difficult flight training program in the world. She has to face thunderstorms, the death of friends, and male instructors who want to wash her out.

Captain Kathryn Hardesty is the toughest and best instructor pilot on the base and the chief of flight safety. She’s demanding because she knows the price of failure is tragedy and a smoking hole. She looks out for all the students, especially the female ones.

Casey has to learn to fly a supersonic jet, not get killed in the process, and face a growing forbidden attraction. Can she muster the intelligence, courage, and unbreakable determination to become an air force pilot? Does she have what it takes to earn wings, find love, and not crash and burn?

In this interview, Liz talks with author Raquel Ramsey, the widow of decorated veteran Ed Ramsey, and her coauthor, Tricia Aurand about their book TAKING FLIGHT: THE NADINE RAMSEY STORY, about WWII Women Air Force Service Pilot, Nadine Ramsey.

In October 1944 Nadine Ramsey was thirty-three and she was flying the cutting-edge P-51 Mustang to New Jersey, its last stop before heading to the war in Europe. The irrepressible young woman from Wichita had long been determined to fly and the gathering storm clouds of World War II provided an unexpected opportunity. Taking Flight is the inspiring story of a girl from Depression-era Kansas who overcame tremendous challenges and defied convention to become an elite pilot—one of the few American women to fly fighter aircraft during World War II.

Taking Flight follows Nadine as she became one of 1,102 women to join the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots and one of only 303 WASPs to take to the skies in military cockpits, transporting aircraft to bases across the nation for use in the theaters of war. This book marks her milestones: the first Kansas woman to earn a commercial pilot license; among the earliest women to fly the US Air Mail; one of only 26 WASPs who flew the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a fighter aircraft—and the first woman to own one; the only woman in the country to instruct male pilots to fly fighter planes after the war. Disbanded in late 1944 to make way for male pilots and barred from piloting for commercial airlines, the WASPs spent the next three decades fighting to win veteran status.

Taking Flight: The Nadine Ramsey Story is a profile in courage of a woman who helped clear the flight path for today’s female combat and commercial aviators.

Visit Nadine Ramsey's webpage to learn more at nadinebramsey.com

In this interview, Liz talks with author Clare Mulley about two incredibly complex and fascinating women: Hannah Reitsch, who was the first female helicopter pilot in the world and a fanatical Nazi, and Melitta Stauffenberg, who was an aeronautical engineer and test pilot for the Nazi regime, but who was also a resistor.

Clare has written three historical biographies including THE WOMAN WHO SAVED THE CHILDREN: A BIOGRAPHY OF EGLANTYNE JEBB, FOUNDER OF SAVE THE CHILDREN; THE SPY WHO LOVED: THE SECRETS AND LIVES OF CHRISTINE GRANVILLE who was Britain’s first female special agent in WWII; and the Aviatrix Book Club discussion book for May 2021, THE WOMEN WHO FLEW FOR HITLER: A TRUE STORY OF SOARING AMBITION AND SEARING RIVALRY. She reviews non-fiction for the UK’s Spectator and Telegraph, and has given talks for TedX, the Houses of Parliament, Royal Albert Hall, the Imperial War Museum, the National Army Museum and British Library, as well as many festivals. She has also been featured on BBC television and radio. I highly recommend you check out her book reviews and blog at her website, www.claremulley.com.

In this conversation with author Melody Foreman, Liz and Melody talk about WWII British Air Transport Auxiliary pilot Mary Ellis who she features in her biography A SPITFIRE GIRL: ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST FEMALE ATA FERRY PILOTS TELLS HER STORY, and Melody's other work, which focuses on Britain in WWII. The ATA Ferry pilots were challenged with climbing into a variety of aircraft with little-to-no type training and made significant contributions to the war. Mary Ellis alone flew 76 different types of aircraft and 400 Spitfires in her five years of service as an ATA pilot, often with no other preparation than a crib-sheet. Melody also highlights the significant contributions these women made for gender equality, earning equal pay to their male counterparts. Despite their incredible achievements, and the positive attitude Mary conveys in this memoir, they still endured age-old challenges. In the movie SPITFIRE: THE PLANE THAT SAVED THE WORLD, a gentleman veteran says, "We knew we could depend upon each other. We knew we were sure of getting support wherever we were." The women, however, among other humiliations and difficulties, often were forced to manage their deliveries according to the bases where their male counterparts would allow them to land. As Mary put it: "Men take ownership of war and talk endlessly of their duty. I can't imagine why they don't think women feel such things, too."
