Welcome to a new series of Podcast with Paul In this first of 3 episodes, Paul interviews Joe Wehbe, a writer from Sydney. Joe and Paul are working on a book together, exploring the contrast and conflict between two workplaces, while also delving into the seriousness of life. 

The conversation centres around the humour in human behaviour and how even the most serious people can be the funniest. Paul and Joe discuss observations made by comedians such as Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, who find humour in everyday situations. They also touch on the concept of self-realization and how it can be funny to see how ridiculous humans can be. 

In this podcast, the hosts explore the concept of humor and how it can be found in unexpected places. They discuss how human beings are inherently funny and how comedians can make people realize how ridiculous humans can be. Paul encourages Gavin to stop making excuses for his smoking habits Gavin explains why he smokes and encourages the guest to quit smoking. 

Gavin talks about the age-old debate of quality versus quantity of life.

Paul and Gavin chat about vaping, with this sometimes is more addictive than smoking, and people who switch to vaping to quit smoking sometimes have to go back to smoking to kick the habit. 

Gavin takes about his past illness. He has used this experience to share and give back. 

During the conversation, Paul and Gavin discuss the difference between smoking and vaping, and the dangers of the latter. 

Gavin's kids have also been vaping and he's noticed physical changes in them. 

Gavin shared a life lesson he would put on his tombstone: Always ask the question. 

He believes that asking a question of an authority figure will reveal if they are a dickhead or not. As an example, he used a situation with a kid getting dropped from D1 to D2 in sports. 

He suggested that his son ask the coach why he was dropped, and if the coach gave constructive feedback, this son can learn and move on. However, if the coach is evasive then his son can know that the coach is not worth their time. 

Gavin also shared a conversation he had with his son who lost out on a job. He suggested that his son ask the company what made them go elsewhere, whether it be price or availability. This conversation highlighted the importance of asking questions and learning from the answers

Martin Hazy Part 3: Seizing The Day To Lead In Climate Change Solutions And Create Sustainable Competitive Advantages

On this final episode of Martin Haese the best is yet to come, Paul talks about Martin's journey from running the city council to taking on responsibility for tackling climate change. Martin recounts his experience at the 2015 United Nations Conference in Paris, where he spoke on behalf of the City of Adelaide. He remembers walking out into the auditorium and seeing the 6000 people in attendance. Paul then inquires about what steps Martin is taking to tackle the issue of climate change.

Martin talks about his experience at the COP 21 climate change conference in Paris. He walked out to a sea of faces, feeling intimidated, but to only be told they had an audience of 4 million watching online. Martin decided to put on a smile to disarm the room and speak confidently. He talks about South Australia leading the way with renewable energy, surpassing Denmark last year. He expresses the importance of being optimistic about the future, and how the world is inspired by South Australia's progress.

The conversation focuses on decarbonising a range of industries, such as agriculture, transport, land use, construction, and supply chains. This is part of the move to a lower emissions future and is commonly referred to as net zero. 

Carbon is essential for life, but an increase in carbon in the atmosphere directly results in an increase in warming. Decarbonisation is not just about offsetting, but also about reducing carbon emissions in the environment. South Australia has the opportunity to become a solutions provider for many of these solutions, with a world market waiting for the products and services they provide.

Martin discusses his vision for South Australia to become a leading provider of renewable energy solutions. He is the chair of the Premier's Climate Change Council and is passionate about creating a sustainable competitive advantage for the region. He believes that it is important for people to understand the implications of climate change and why it is necessary to act now. He points out that, with an average temperature increase of 1.5 degrees, there will be a disproportionate increase in extreme weather events. He encourages people to think about how their actions have an impact on the planet, and that the same principles apply to the entire planet as they do to individual homes.

Martin Haese: “Working Hard To Increase Emotional Intelligence & Advocate For Businesses During Challenging Times"

In part 2 of Martin Haese’s The best is yet to Come, Martin talks about his experience as mayor and how he worked with many mayors around South Australia. He speaks about how it was a privilege to be Lord Mayor, and how he made a difference to lead the CITY of Adelaide. Martin explains that he felt he had done all he wanted to achieve and it was time for a new chapter.

In the conversation, Martin reflects on his time in office and his decision to not run again. He explains that while the public saw a successful council with infrastructure in place and 750 staff, privately he was dealing with family members who were very ill and working 80-90 hours a week. He notes that being Lord Mayor is not a 9-5 role, and to do it justice one must be dedicated and willing to put in the hours.

Martin speaks about what it was like to be the Lord Mayor of a major city and the expectations that came with the role. He explain that it was an incredibly demanding job, often requiring him to be on all the time, working late into the night to make sure everything was prepared for the next day. 

Martin explain that he would usually start their day at 7:30 am and finish it at 11:00 pm. He explains that while he gave his all to the role, sometimes it is best to move on and choose something else when you are at your peak. Martin then elaborates on what they did after leaving the role as Lord Mayor of Adelaide.

Martin was also a former Chief Executive of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in South Australia (Business SA). He took on the role with the intention of going back into business, and he was transparent with the board about this. When COVID hit, the business community was in crisis and they looked to the organisation for leadership. 

Martin and his team worked hard to provide advocacy, industrial relations, and other services to many thousands of businesses across South Australia. He also inherited a structure that was not as purposeful as other chambers of commerce, so he worked hard to make changes to increase membership and provide value to those members. He worked closely with the then treasurer, Rob Lucas, to advocate for the business community and make sure their needs were met.

Gravin reflects on his childhood and how he left school at an early age, but his mother insisted he have a job.

He then describes his first job with Rob Usher, who owned a custom exhaust business. He remembers the address of the business clearly and reflects on how Rob gave him a chance, taught him a lot and was an example of self-employment.

Rob also taught him the importance of taking care of the customer. Gavin notes that, while his father taught him a lot, the difference was that his father worked for someone else whereas Rob was self-employed.

Martin Haese Former Lord Mayor of The City of Adelaide is the special guest on this new podcast series with Podcaster / Consciousness Advocate / Mental Health Campaigner/ Happiness Coach and Story Teller Paul Rowse from The Laugher Project.

Martin has had an extensive career as an entrepreneur and manager. He co-founded the Entrepreneurs Organisation in South Australia and was the General Manager of the Rundle Mall Management Authority. During his tenure, he successfully launched public holiday trading and built the case for a $30 million public realm upgrade. From 2010 to 2014, he was the Chairman of the Bay to Birdwood Motoring Event and served on various boards in Adelaide. He has an MBA and is very knowledgeable about motor vehicles and their history. The conversation will explore his career, his accomplishments, and his views on emotional intelligence.

Martin Haese is an incredibly successful individual. He studied at the University of Adelaide and was a guest lecturer at the University of Wollongong. In 2014 he was elected Lord Mayor of Adelaide and did many great things for the city, such as rolling out the 10 gigabit ultrafast fiber optic network in partnership with TPG Telecom, investing in laneways, tramways and bikeways, and being a guest speaker at the Paris Cop 21. In 2019 he was appointed the CEO of Business SA.

His colleagues say Martin is a joy to work with, a great lecturer and an outstanding Lord Mayor. He currently resides in the city of Adelaide with his wife, and they love living in the urban environment.

Martin and Paul met 14-15 years ago when they were both studying for their MBA. Paul is passionate about education and the people he meets. Martin was thinking about how their lives have changed since then and asked Paul what made him decide to go back to school. Paul mentioned that he still stays in contact with many of the people from his course. Martin remembered reading on Paul's LinkedIn page about a conversation he had with John Gardner and how he wouldn't have known him if not for George, who was also in the course. The conversation then turned to Martin’s time as Lord Mayor of Adelaide and the work he did to protect and promote the beauty of the city.

Paul and Martin had both completed an MBA together. Paul purchased a $1,000 voucher for a business school program for a young man he had employed at this company academy, but he had said he didn't need it. So Paul took it up. This podcast episode highlights the importance of education, the power of networking and chance encounters to open up new opportunities.
