As a young rock drummer, I watched my guitar guys use fuzz tone pedals to add that rugged, distorted HEAVINESS to powerhouse songs!

But here's what I DIDN'T know: The fuzz tone was created by ACCIDENT! 🤯

Marty Robbins' lead guitarist broke a string in studio while recording "Don't Worry" around 1960 - and BOOM! History was made!

We just lost Ozzy this Tuesday. He was 76 and had just wrapped up his reunion tour with Black Sabbath. Last week, we said goodbye to Connie Francis at 80. As we spin nearly 80 years of rock 'n’ roll, these losses hit more often. But the music? It never stops. It’s the heartbeat of our lives—and we keep playing it.

This summer, several of us ventured on an epic European adventure packed with history, wild sights, and... gelato. Yes, we set aside $800 just for gelato and came home with almost $600 (not bad, right?). But the real win? The gelato champions:

There were days we sampled 9-10 scoops, and others where we didn’t have any (shocking, we know). Rome alone has over 2,500 gelato shops, but trust us—we found the best.

🏛️ Explored the Colosseum, Pompeii, and the jaw-dropping Sagrada Familia (142 years and still going!)

🎬 Filmed a cameo in Cannes (no autographs, please 😉)

Before streaming, before CDs, before even cassette tapes... there was this. A tiny radio that turned electrical signals into magic. ⚡✨

Marlene found one just like mine from a man in Philly for $75.... tucked in a drawer for 60 years. It still works. And yep—it still plays rock n’ roll. 🔊❤️

One of you said it must’ve been the rock 'n' roll story that lit the fire. A real one. And that got me thinking...

What if?

What if things had gone just a little differently for my band, Sonny Farlow and the Resurrection?

🎤 We were set to open for Paul Revere and the Raiders at the Ruidoso Convention Center; TV stars with gold records like Kicks, Hungry, and Indian Reservation. But ticket sales were slow... and the show got canned.

🎸 Next up: Opening for Gary Lewis and the Playboys at Liberty Hall in El Paso. They were #1 with This Diamond Ring, and I was pumped, my younger brother Philip was finally gonna see me play. But… they asked for union cards. We didn’t have any. No card, no gig.

🌉 And then, the big one. Fillmore West. Yes, THAT Fillmore West in San Francisco, where Hendrix, Joplin, The Doors, and so many legends played. We were booked. Ready. Signed. Then two of our guys backed out. One joined the Navy, the other had kids and a day job. Just like that… the dream show was off.

It’s wild to look back and think… what might have been?

But I’m still here, still rocking, and still grateful to share these stories with all of you.

Saw a post yesterday about 60s/70s heartthrob Bobby Sherman—what a voice! Some of my musician friends used to play in the band that backed him up, including the talented Kenny Smith, one solid bass player.

When I first started playing with Sonny Farlow, we had a month-long trio gig on El Paso’s infamous Dyer Street. Let me tell you—playing as a trio with two seasoned pros like Sonny and Kenny was no joke! I learned a ton, especially how vital it is for bass players and drummers to lock in tight.

We were pulling $90 a night, three nights a week—not bad for the time. One night, the club owner said there’d be a wedding during our Friday night set. Seemed a little odd, but hey, rock n’ roll life, right?

Well... at 10 PM, what looked like a full-on brawl broke out. Turns out the jilted ex showed up—with a knife—and tried to go after the groom! 😳 Luckily, he was subdued, and the wedding still happened. We stuck around and played an extra hour—and the bride tipped us $200 for staying. Not a bad night’s work!

Ahhh, the wild days of rock n’ roll. One more fond memory: I think the club owner liked me—she’d leave a shot of whiskey next to my stool. I was 17. My bandmates were in their 20s. It was a ride.

The James Gang was formed in Cleveland, home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—and they’ve got a sound that sticks with you. I heard them again a couple of weeks ago, and BAM—instant nostalgia! It took me right back to a week I spent in San Francisco and the East Bay.

Back then, Citicorp offered me a promotion to take over their SF office on 415 Pine St. While scoping it out, I crashed with my best friend Richard Rainwater and his wife Margie. Every morning, I’d drop them at work just so I could use their car during the day. And guess what was on repeat in their 8-track player? The James Gang!

I grew to love them—and fast forward to today, I gave them another spin and was rocked to discover why they were so damn good: Joe Walsh was their lead guitarist and vocalist! Yep, the same Joe Walsh who later joined a little band called The Eagles! 🎶

And here’s another fun fact—one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time, Paul Rodgers, was also in TWO of their bands. Oh, and he’s NOT in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—because he turned it down! 🤯

The best birthday gift I could give myself? Getting back behind the mic and playing music for everyone (myself included)! Kicked things off with a whole lotta Jelly—The Jellybricks, Jelly Roll Kings, and Jelly Roll himself. Not sure how that happened, but hey, more Jelly to come!

Last week, I mentioned our week-long gig in San Jose. What I didn’t mention? It was at a real Hell’s Angels club—not your businessmen weekend rider types, but the rough, tough, rowdy Hell’s Angels! 🏍️ This place had a big stage, and once we started playing, it got LOUD. So, naturally, we cranked it up even more. 🔊

About thirty minutes in, a massive guy came up to the stage and said his band wanted to sit in right now—using our equipment! Our organist flat-out refused to let anyone near his big Hammond B3, and our guitarist was also a hard no. But after a quick huddle, we decided to let them go for it—figured it was better than risking our stuff! I handed over my drumsticks and sat back to watch. 🎹🎸

They were…not great 😅. After 20 minutes, they wrapped up, and the big guy came over to thank us. For the rest of the week, we didn’t pay for a single drink! 🍻

So yes, I know what a real Hell’s Angel is, and our equipment survived to tell the tale! This week, we’ve got some killer rockers, a great Deuces are Wilder cover duo, and hey—if you feel like getting up and playing, we’d welcome you to join! 🎧

True story: After wrapping up our first tour stop, we kicked off the second leg in San Jose. With plenty of free time in the afternoons, I had the “brilliant” idea to go see what was happening at the student demonstrations on the UC Berkeley campus. Let’s just say… bad call!

Within seconds of arriving, we got MACED! If you’ve never experienced it, trust me—you don’t want to. Our eyes were burning, stinging, and basically shut for hours. We were stranded until we could even open them enough to drive. Ah, the joys of being young rock n' roll musicians with a little too much free time!

Listening to San Francisco by Scott McKenzie and San Francisco Nights by Eric Burdon & The Animals the other day took me back to a wild six-week Bay Area tour with my band. We hit San Jose, Oakland’s Jack London Square, and Santa Rosa, where we followed none other than Sly and The Family Stone!

Santa Rosa was our first show, and we were hyped. After our set around 1 am, the club owner invited us back to the kitchen for roast beef sandwiches and a beer. Just as we were about to call it a night, he dropped a bomb: “Time for your 2-6 am set!”

Let’s just say, words were exchanged, and he calmly placed his cleaver on the table that he used to carve roast beef, warning us in a quiet way that if we didn’t complete the gig, we wouldn’t get paid—and we’d never play California again.

Our manager, back in Texas, hadn’t mentioned this "after-hours" gig detail. By 5 am, we were wiped, playing to a tiny group of 10, but we finished the week, got paid, and headed to our next booking in Oakland. Rock n' Roll life wasn’t for the faint-hearted!

Our time off was filled with motorcycle riding, cave dwelling, rum and chocolate testing and let’s not forget the tequila or back in time with the Mayans. The visits to six countries with our KC pals was a blast and put a lot of gas back in the tank!!

Our first show of 2024 has the last song ever done by the Fab 4. John Lennon did a tape in 1977 and through the years several attempts were made to make a record from it but there was too much of a hiss. Fast forward to this year, utilizing AI, Paul and others knocked the hiss out and with Ringo laying down a drum track and Paul finishing lyrics, they completed the song! We decided to play it after the latest new stuff from The Stones.

A producer reached out and asked us to feature their artist, Gene O, which we did. Stay tuned for an interview with him later on. Nervous Eaters doing their hot new single, "Talkk". The original version of "Fortune Teller” and brand new from The Libertines, "Run Run Run."

For 12 years, the Sweethearts featured over 50 of the greatest female musicians of the era, performing a mix of jazz, blues, swing and big band. They played all over the World from 1937-1949.

In my life, the war that brings up the most memories of lost friends and schoolmates was The Vietnam War. I remember how emotional

I was at seeing the names of people I knew when we visited the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. Did you know that each year on #MemorialDay a national moment of remembrance/silence takes place at 3:00 pm local time?

One of the best things for me is when I learn stuff about an artist that I never knew before preparing for the next playlist, especially those I actually played their music in my early band years.

I was shocked to learn that Eddie Cochran was just as accomplished as Buddy Holly, yet without near the same accolades.

As the leader and founder of the Rock Hall of Fame group ’The Ronettes’ she helped and worked with ’Wall of Sound’ producer, Phil Spector to create some of the most memorable songs from the 60’s like ’Be My Baby’ which we will play and highlight her as our Sticky in this week’s show, #202, The Beautiful 2’s.

Over the past couple of years, we have had requests to do an all covers show and so we did one. I am pretty particular about covers and with over 700 of ’em, tough to choose 10-12 for a show. There are literally thousands of them but we pick songs we like and if there is a cool cover, great!

However, with the passing of Charlie Watts, the Stones who still are rocking are nearing the end of their majestic 58-year run. When you take the 3 Stones who hung together for all those decades and the original fab 4, only 4 remain from the 7 and most of the other 48 groups have long since disbanded and many others have gone on to rock n’ roll heaven.

I switched gears and dropped usual format (except the music) and read tributes and quotes from all corners of the world after each musical set. For me, it was the natural thing to do.

We certainly didn’t stop the great rock n’ roll music and hoped it would honor Charlie.

• Guess what? The Stones were represented even though it was recorded a week before ’Let’s Spend the Night Together’ fit in nicely.

He would go to downtown Chicago at around 16 or 17 and play with many of the blues legends like Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters and many others in their world.

The black blues dudes would roll their eyes and say 'here comes another white kid who thinks he can play the blues' and laugh.

After the first time he played, they changed their tune and were stunned that not only could he play, but he really felt it! When they asked him how, he replied 'I'm Jewish and we have always been persecuted and I feel it.'
