<p>The number on the scale is not the be-all and end-all measure of weight loss success.</p>

<p>I see all the time, “Muscle weighs more than fat”, and then I see 70 people jump on the person that said that about how a pound is a pound. LOL</p>

<p>Guess what?</p>

<p>1 pound of muscle takes up about ¼ of the space as 1 pound of fat.</p>

<p>Sooo if you are gaining muscle, but losing fat, the scale may not move, but your measurements are going to change.</p>

<p>How many times a day do you say to yourself “When I reach my goal weight, I will….”. </p>

<p>We often times say to ourselves, when I reach my goal weight, I'll…</p>

<ul><li>stand up for myself</li><li>look good in those clothes</li><li>have that confidence. </li><li>I will, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. </li><li>The list goes on and on… and on!</li></ul>

<p>Sadly, it doesn't work this way. </p>

<p>The only thing weight loss changes is the size of your body in the clothes you wear. If you don't have a sense of style at your current weight, you're probably not going to have this magical sense of style when you lose the weight and you get to your goal weight. </p>

<p>(Which I thought was unfair, by the way, because I spent 42 years dressing out of the men's department. I really would have preferred to magically have gotten a sense of style.)</p>

<p>One of the things that I work with women on in my programs is looking at weight loss for weight loss. And on this podcast, we are going to talk about why it’s important to start doing those things you're putting off… while you are losing weight.</p>

<p>What do you need to lose weight? Well, in the big picture, it's really kind of simple, but it feels so complicated. In my experience of losing a hundred pounds three times, to lose weight you need a few things…</p>

<ul><li>a plan for eating and movement</li><li>to drop the judgment and track what you eat,</li><li>eat to balance out your hormones which stops those horrible cravings </li><li>stop cutting your calories to nothing. </li></ul>

<p>It's not about eating less and moving more, but you do have to know what you're eating. And you do have to be able to say no, when it doesn't serve your purpose. But oftentimes we blame binge eating and we blame cravings and we blame stress, eating, and believe me I've felt and blamed all those things myself.</p>

<p>So today let’s talk about changing all that and create a solid plan to reach your goals!</p>

<p>It's the end of January already, and more than likely that first week of January, you set some huge goals. </p>

<p>And by the second or third week of January, maybe you started slipping and I want to help you get out of there. So why should you listen to me? </p>

<p>I'm coach Michelle and I have lost a hundred pounds, three times in my life. I was put on my very first diet of 900 calories at the age of nine.</p>

<p>And I have lived on the weight loss rollercoaster, and in that circle of hate, for close to 42 years. I lost the last 120 pounds, for the last time I'm ever going to lose it at 42. So if they are telling you, you can't lose weight or you're feeling too old to lose weight, get out of the there because I am 50 now.</p>

<p>And I have been maintaining this weight loss for going on seven years. So you can do this, but one of the things you have to do in order to do this is get out of that circle of hate. Now, what is the circle of hate? </p>

<p>Today I am going to explain the circle of hate, and give you some steps to get out of that hole!</p>

    <![CDATA[<p>Welcome to Reaching. ONEderland where I help you reach your weight loss goal and maintain it because without maintaining it, you're stuck on that weight loss rollercoaster forever.</p>

<p>This is episode 19, where we are going to talk about we're going to talk about mindset habits, and Macros because they all work together.</p>

<p>Now, for those of you that don't know me,</p>

<p>I'm coach Michelle and I am a unique weight loss coach in that for 42 years, I was on the weight loss rollercoaster. <b>I lost a hundred pounds, three times. </b></p>

<p>I was put on my very <b>first diet at the age of nine,</b> and it was a 900 calorie diet. I never want to go back there, but it was not <b>until I was 42, where I actually hit my weight loss goal and maintained it for seven years. </b></p>

<p>Now, if you do the math, because you know, I was a math major in college. If you do the math that means <b>I am 50 years old and I am still maintaining said 120 pound </b>weight loss that took me about 18 months to achieve. So I am here to help you reach that weight loss goal and stay there.</p>

<p>My goal is not to help you do another diet, but to <b>create a lifestyle of healthy living </b>that allows you to maintain your weight loss. Let's talk about mindset habits, and Macros because it sounds cool. </p>

<p>No, because those three things work together and they are what have allowed me to reach my goal and stay there for as long as I have.</p>

<p>I have lost a hundred pounds in four months in my life and gained it back. And I've lost it in six months and gained it back in eight months. </p>

<p>So when I say it takes all three, this is the way I was able to do it. And this is the way I am coaching people to reach their goals and stay there.</p>

<p>Because without maintaining it, all we have is the weight loss rollercoaster, and we don't want to go there. There should be no weight loss rollercoasters in this world.</p>

<p>Now welcome to episode 18, where we're going to discuss why goal setting does not work for weight loss.</p>

<p>I have a special story for this, but let me tell you why you should be paying attention to me.</p>

<p>I have lost a hundred pounds, not once, but three times in my life. And I was put on my very first diet at the age of nine, never reaching my goal and staying there for longer than a few months at a time.</p>

<p>Now, fast forward to 42, where I lost 120 pounds in 18 months. So it was not overnight but I've maintained it for going on 7 years.</p>

<p>And if you kinda do the math there, you'll see I'm 50 years old and still maintaining my weight loss.</p>

<p>This is the what? Fourth day of January. Yes, this is the fourth day of January.</p>

<p>And I weighed the same today as I did, the day before Halloween. So when I say standard goal setting does not work for weight loss. I think I might know what I'm talking about.</p>

<p>But I am here to help you figure out what does work and explain to you why goal setting and its standard form does not work.</p>

<p>Now why does goal setting not work? Well, goal setting is actually good. </p>

<p>Goal setting has to be with smart goals. Now smart is an acronym and it stands for <b>specific measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound</b> if your goal setting is based 100% on a number on the scale, you can not hit a couple of those required elements with weight loss.</p>

<p>Let me explain if your specific goal is, I want to lose a hundred pounds this year. All right. So it's measurable. You record how many pounds you've lost each week. It's attainable.</p>

<p>But it's very large.</p>

<p>But it's relevant and it's time bound.</p>

<p><b>But with the human body, you cannot control how fast you're going to lose that weight. </b></p>

<p>So today, let's talk about what we can do instead!</p>

<p>So what is episode 17? I actually want to talk to you about, the reasons intuitive eating didn't work for me. And I don't think it’s going to work for you and why I chose Macros instead. </p>

<p>Intuitive eating always cracks me up because I could intuitively eat an entire box of donuts because they taste good. And in a period of my life where I used food, food to cope, a box of donuts was right up there with where I would be eating. Another problem with intuitive eating is I am hungry all the flip and time.</p>

<p>And if I eat according to the intuitive eating quote unquote rules, I'm eating when I'm hungry and only when I'm hungry. Well, that leads me to eat a whole lot more. If I don't have some kind of a structure. And finally, and another reason is, excuse me, my world was focused on food. So intuitively eating means you sit there and you enjoy what you're eating.</p>

<p>And I'm not saying that you shouldn't incorporate some of the intuitive eating philosophies into Macros, but I'm saying the intuitive eating alone is not going to help you reach your weight loss goal, because there's no structure to be perfectly honest with you with intuitive eating. When my cravings took me way off track, I gained weight because there was no structure to intuitive eating.</p>

<p><br /></p>

<p>It was eat what made your body feel good? Well, my body felt pretty flipping awesome at that period in my life, eating a box of donuts or eating two snicker bars on the way home from the store, I wasn't in tune enough with my body at that time to pay attention to how inflamed I felt or to me, it was a normal feeling.</p>

<p><b>What the heck are macros?</b></p>

<p>My goal here is to break it down for a ya little!</p>

<p><i>Macros are just a different way to track your food.</i>  It's different than just calorie counting.</p>

<p>Macros are the Macronutrients in your food.</p>

<p>We are talking:</p>

<ul><li>Fats</li><li>Carbs</li><li>Protein</li></ul>

<p>Our body needs ALL of these for different reasons.</p>

<p>Fats keep our lady hormones and hunger hormones balanced. (starved all the time?  You may not be eating enough fat)</p>

<p>Carbs are the bodies natural energy source (drained all the time?  You may not be getting enough carbs or eating too few calories)</p>

<p>Protein keeps you from losing muscle.  Muscles burns fat faster and keeps osteoporosis at bay.</p>

<p>Every body is different, and tracking your macros helps you determine what works best for your body.</p>

<p>Macros done right make weight loss and maintenance easier because you are fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to be healthy.</p>

    <![CDATA[<p>One of the big questions I get is... "I'm not a weightlifter, will macros work for me?"</p>

<p>The answer is YES!</p>

<p>Macros are "just" a nutritional framework.</p>

<p>But it's a framework that just works!</p>

<p>In reality Macro's work for several reasons!</p>

<p>We will look at 3 reasons why they work.</p>

<p>1. Tracking</p>

<p>2. Different Body Types = Different Macros</p>

<p>3. Using whole foods to reach your Macros and how this helps.</p>

<p>Ya'll know I am a big fan tracking! If we don't know what we are eating and how much, losing is HARD!</p>

<p>One of the perks of macros is that we get to track our food... that make us a #MacroUnicorn.</p>

<p>Another reason they "just work", is because we can learn what macros work for our body type.</p>

<p>There are 3 body types, and each body type thrives on different macros.</p>

<p>It can be difficult to figure out your body type, but a good macro coach can help you determine what macros work for you with a little fun testing and teamwork.</p>

<p>And the third reason Macros work is kinda of a trick. LOL.</p>

<p>Macros are easier to track and balance out when we eat whole foods.</p>

<p>Whole foods fuel our bodies without added chemical and what I refer to as crap.</p>

<p>Putting good stuff in, makes for a clean running engine. It's higher grade fuel for our bodies to process.</p>

    <![CDATA[<p>I hated myself fat!</p>

<p>Self hate was a theme in my life. But self hate also kept me from losing weight and keeping it off.</p>

<p>I used the self hate to lose 100+ pounds twice. It worked, but I couldn’t keep it off that way.  </p>

<p>I punished myself to lose the weight cutting calories low, and avoiding life situations that included food. I didn’t participate in birthday parties, or eating out or anything that included food.</p>

<p>So since life includes food and food isn’t like other things we feel control us… like alcohol or smoking or any of those other addictive things how do we do this journey without avoiding?</p>

<p>This requires changing a few things, including how we think about ourselves. Switching to caring about myself, and giving myself love allowed me to reach my goal and stay there.</p>

<p>There is a ton of research showing we can’t punish ourselves to change, and the best way to teach change is with love.</p>

<p>If you are hating yourself, and punishing yourself trying to reach ONEderland. But you keep falling waaay off track. This is your chance to see you're not alone and give yourself the gift of realizing you change to self love and reach your goal.</p>

<p>It’s time to stop kicking yourself and start loving yourself to your goal. You will get there a LOT quicker.</p>

<p>You are worth love, and others in your life love you just as you are.</p>

    <![CDATA[<p><b>Ending the weight loss hopelessness always felt like a search for normal to me</b>. All I wanted was to be “normal” with food.  </p>

<p>I didn’t understand that <i>normal people didn’t eat an entire package of Oreos</i> in one sitting all the damn time.</p>

<p>I felt out of control, and like everyone was different than I was. And they were just a little.</p>

<p>The biggest difference between me and the normal people was that <b>I coped with life using food</b>, and they lived life and dealt with how they felt not using food.</p>

<p>This episode talks about <b>why our search for normal is focused in the wrong place.  </b></p>

<p>Focusing on normal habits first is such a huge help. But the big issue I see is women want to change it <i>All</i> at once. This doesn’t work. Trying to change a lifetime of habits all at the same time is a recipe for disaster.</p>

<p>This is like my 16 year old “loving the idea” of taking extra classes in high school. She did it! She got special approval to take an extra class. But she also changed from Brick and Mortar school to Online school this year.</p>

<p>Guess what?</p>

<p>Within a week, she was overwhelmed and she withdrew.</p>

<p>This is what we do with weight loss. We try to change all the habits because we “love the idea” of being that healthy person, but within a week we quit.</p>

<p><b>So let’s take a look at the idea of “normal”, and see how we can move slowly to coping without using food, </b>and how we can do it in a way that we don’t suddenly feel helpless a week into the process.</p>

    <![CDATA[<p>Playing the weight loss blame game leaves you powerless. In order to lose weight it's important to take back your power and keep yourself focused. This focus set’s you up for weight loss success.</p>

<p>Wanting to lose weight is the dream sooo many women have, and it breaks my heart over and over to hear that they can't because their family won't support them.</p>

<p>It's not our family's job to determine what we eat. In the case of mom's, it's our job to show our families how to eat healthy so they can live healthy. Living a healthy life means being able to participate in all the family fun.  </p>

<p>It’s so hard to sit on the couch and watch our children grow up. I did that with one of my three children. The guilt I feel over the life I missed out on him can’t be made up for the energy and love I can share with his child.  </p>

<p>Reaching ONEderland and getting below 199 on the scale takes commitment. It takes focus and takes changing how we think, feel and act as we make these changes.</p>

<p>One of those changes is taking responsibility for the food we choose to eat. It’s all a choice, and it’s your choice. It’s not your family's choice.</p>

<p>It's time to ditch the weight loss blame game, create healthy habits, and get off the weight loss roller coaster.</p>

<p>How would you feel if you could cure your monthly chocolate binge just by making a few changes the rest of the month? </p>

<p>Hormone imbalance and cravings go hand in hand.  Balancing out those lady hormones for that time of the month allows us to not have such a huge craving for everyone's favorite chocolate. Imbalanced hormones do a few different things. And I share a few in this episode.</p>

<p>You have more than just estrogen floating through your system. I know it would be nice if we could all say that it’s the only hormone, but we have some other ones. We have digestive hormones, which if they are not in balance, we feel hungry all the time. And during that time of the month, that hunger turns into hangry.</p>

<p>Did you know that poor nutrition can actually increase the stress hormone cortisol?  Cortisol is a stress response hormone, and when we under-eat, this hormone increases.  When we don’t give our body the nutrition it needs this hormone increases.</p>

<p>So what does the stress hormone cortisol do?  Well, it does a lot of things like make the tummy bigger (not your goal right?), but it also disrupts sleep cycles.</p>

<p>What the heck do hormones have to do with weight loss anyway?  Our bodies are run by hormones.  We have hormones that make us feel full, hormones that make us feel satiated, and hormones that start and stop the weight loss process.</p>

<p>Balancing out these hormones is how I lost 120 pounds the last time, and have been able to maintain it for seven years when I've lost a hundred pounds twice before naturally and was not able to maintain it. I actually gained it back in just a couple of months, longer than it took me to lose it. </p>

<p>So let's talk about hormones and weight loss. Over 40. Once we hit 40, our world goes a little upside down and everybody knows. We all hear it's hard to lose weight after 30, but after 40 it's nearly impossible and you should just accept it. </p>

<p>Wrong answer! </p>

<p> I did lose after 40, and  I coach women over 40 how they can lose this weight and keep it off too!</p>

<p>It's time to change that preconception. Our hormones do go wacky, but there are ways we can naturally adjust and fluctuate our hormones with food. </p>
