This episode is an excellent one discussing mental health, ADHD, community, and the Black man.

John Hazelwood is an early 30's African American male mental health advocate in the fields of ADHD and Black Men's healing awareness. John was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 21 due to emotional regulation and productivity issues experienced throughout his college career. Though his degree and career are in the Mechanical Engineering field, he has found an unwavering passion for mental health awareness within recent years, especially as a minority, as he embarked on a journey to understand his own mental health. John and Marc Almodovar are founders of the Men's ADHD Facebook Support Group with over 10k members. He is the co-host of the Men's ADHD Support Group podcast where he discusses disparities in the mental health community while also documenting a daily journey with ADHD. John utilizes YT, twitter, FB, and IG to create mental health inspired content and is affiliated with mental health resource groups such as Black Men Heal and Therapy for Black Men. His content has been featured throughout numerous mental health accounts including recognition from high-profile influencers for work in the field.

John's goal is to inspire, empower, and motivate men, especially those of color. He proves that safe space does exist and mental health is important by being a much-needed Black male representative in the ADHD community. Through vulnerability, transparency, honesty, and resilience, John hopes to bridge the gap in understanding neurodiversity while sharing from a place of authenticity personal experiences, educating, and networking with other likeminded individuals. Moving forward, he wishes to expand his presence to TV, streaming throughout networks instead of only social media!

"Change begins with us acknowledging and being accountable for how we show up, pledging to dedicate the bandwidth it takes to make a difference in our community and our own lives."

Kristina Bergsten is the owner and founder of The Animal Law Firm. The Animal Law Firm represents people and their pets and livestock in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. As the name of the firm implies, her practice focuses exclusively on animal law. As a vegan and animal lover, she strives for animal welfare and protection. Some of the cases she handles involve veterinary malpractice, pet custody disputes, puppy lemon law violations, dog bite defense, breeder contracts, and service animal representation.

After undergrad, Ms. Bergsten was accepted into The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and obtained her Juris Doctor in 2012. During law school, she was part of the American Indian Council and the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF). She was admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey in 2013 and then in Colorado in 2017.

With a reputation for professionalism and high ethical standards, Ms. Bergsten has received myriad testimonials and five-star ratings on Avvo, Google, and Justia. She frequently educates her clients on off-leash laws and dog park etiquette, and represents dogs and other animals that have a history of biting.

A nationally recognized animal attorney, Ms. Bergsten has obtained favorable results on behalf of her clients in cases related to state and federal service animal compliance, illegal ownership of exotic and wild animals, the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act (PACFA), sanctuaries and rescues.

When not fighting for the best interests of animals, Ms. Bergsten continues to play an active role in her legal community through her memberships in various professional organizations. She is a member of the Colorado Bar Association’s Civil Rights Committee and Judicial Liaison Committee, the Colorado Women's Bar Association, the Denver Bar Association, the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, the Delaware County Bar Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the New Jersey Bar Association, and the New Jersey Trial Lawyers Association.

Her work in the social services field included the foster care system, rural social work, and programs serving low income older adults. In 2012, Erika founded Hope Tank, a community space and gift store that gives back in Denver. Hope Tank uses retail to connect customers to justice-focused organizations, artists, micro businesses, and groups doing important work in our community. That Hope Lady Consulting works with businesses, nonprofits, and leaders to identify their values, put them into action, and articulate them to their clients, customers, donors, and investors. In response to constant calls for introductions to BIPOC, LGBTQ, and women-owned businesses, in 2017 Erika started the Go Big For Small Biz Inclusive Guide- a searchable directory as well as a growing community of micro businesses owners who use mutual aid to fill in the gaps for resources available to them. She views the micro business community as an integral part of building and sustaining healthy communities, and devotes a large part of her efforts towards uplifting their contributions.

In this episode, I will discuss how self-sabotage can be a way to avoid feelings of fear or insecurity. I will offer advice on how to overcome rationalization, which is a knee-jerk response to avoid these feelings. I will also share how we have three voices inside of us and that our head usually just gives logical reasons for things on either side, but our heart is usually the one keeping us where we are. If we want to work on overcoming self sabotage, we need to set boundaries and figure out who we want to become and then build processes in place to help us get there.

[00:04 - 01:51] Opening Segment

Rationalizing wrong decisions

Attempting to justify inappropriate behaviors

[03:29 - 05:48] Rationalization

Slow down and question your decisions

Ask yourself if you are moving forward or staying where you are

Strip the emotions; listen to the true logic of things

Allow yourself to truly hear yourself

Rationalization is avoiding “better” by naming it “hard”

Becoming aware of your potential and never meeting it

[08:30 - 10:09] Closing Segment

Overcome self-sabotage and achieve your goals

Final words

Quotes:

"You have to keep running to outrun the beasts, but you're also trying to figure out what will happen once you get to the cliff. As you get closer, you see that there are pillars set up to allow you to cross the Canyon. You're deathly scared of heights, and the idea of having to jump from pillar to pillar is something you can't fathom doing. What other options do you have?" - Sarah Hipps

"At some point you have to become more stricter with yourself. Set boundaries, figure out who you want to become and then put processes in place to build towards it." - Sarah Hipps

So what does it feel like to cry? And how do we relate to crying in our culture or within our family or friends? It's really about opening up and being vulnerable and learning about ourselves. In today’s episode, I welcome Cyrus Henry to share with us how he is promoting vulnerability and openness towards emotions in a world of toxic masculinity. In this episode, we talk about why it's important for men to learn how to cry, and how this process of self-discovery can open up a pathway for them to connect with their emotions, their spiritual essence, and their physicality. We also discuss the importance of taking on a more supportive role in our relationships with others, and how alcohol and violence can be symptomatic of underlying shame or fear.

[00:04 - 09:24] Opening Segment

Helping men learn about themselves and develop their own individual dreams

Cyrus talks about the Haka dance and its significance

Connection between men and masculinity

They need safe ways to express their anger in a healthy way

[21:07 - 24:39] Breaking Gender-Specific Roles

We talk about how being the provider is not always a man’s job

The effects of having a female provider

[27:52 - 36:25]

Men need to be held accountable for their actions

They also need a safe space to work on their issues

Men can benefit from working on anger and releasing it safely.

Men need to be educated about their emotions

Cyrus’ retreat program

Using emotional release techniques to help men and women connect more effectively

Our society could sometimes be oversimplified and narrow-minded when it comes to certain traditions. We are taught that hitting your child is always because of their love, no matter what. But this isn't always ideal or necessary.

In today's episode, I'll be sharing the impact of culture on how we communicate. Negative ideas, and how not questioning them can lead to problems down the line.

There's a reason why we're defending something and it doesn't always have to do with our comfort level. It's important to ask ourselves why we're doing this and if there's a better answer than just "It's fine for me." There are valid reasons for why we do such things, but the real question is, isn't there another way that won't result in physical and psychological consequences?

[00:04 - 07:05] Opening Segment

Defending things in our lives that don't need defending

Physical discipline in children

Hazing: does the benefits outweigh the consequences?

[07:06 - 19:06] Weighing the Benefits vs. the Risks

Hazing as a way to build bonds, but could be humiliating and dangerous

Hitting as a sign of love amongst parents

What is worth defending?

How narrow-mindedness prevents us from being better

[19:07 - 28:11] Rational and Emotional

Rational self - knows what is best for the situation

Emotional self - defends what is perceived as necessary

The importance of being honest with yourself

Recognizing being defensive

[28:12 - 29:49] Closing Segment

Final words

Watch out for future episodes

Quotes:

"When we defend things, our thoughts, our beliefs, our ideals, our actions should legitimately be questioned. And if we don't have real answers for them, then you're just defending something that you just don't have to." - Sarah Hipps

"There are plenty of things that I have lived through that I don't think anybody should have to live through. And our narrow sidedness of not recognizing if there are different paths to the same thing, even if it makes us uncomfortable, it needs to be explored." - Sarah Hipps

Welcome to another episode of the Show Up with Sarah Podcast!

Ned W. Schaut has a mission to redefine fatherhood. He is a husband to one beauty, a father to five fun kiddos, and a friend to many. He is an Author, Podcast Host, and small business owner. He lives in Kona, Hawaii and can be found outside exploring new things with his family. Ned has found his greatest opportunity to leave a mark on this earth by embracing his role and opportunity as a father. He wants to help other fathers make that same discovery to enjoy their adventure of fatherhood and be proud of the legacy they will leave future generations. He believes every father who embraces their role intentionally will change the world for generations to come.

In 2019 he wrote a book called Rebel & Create: A Compass for the Craft of Fatherhood. Following the release of his book he launched the Fatherhood Field Notes podcast. In this podcast he uncovers real, authentic, and messy stories from everyday life creating an opportunity for men on the adventure of fatherhood to learn from each other's wins and losses. From the momentum of his book he created the Fatherhood Legacy Journal which is a daily journal to engage fathers. This project was successfully funded through a Kickstarter Campaign, the journals were printed and shipped for January 2020. He embraces this global mantra daily: Rebel against the view that our actions as fathers have little impact, together we will Create lives engaged in mastering the craft of fatherhood…this will Redefine Fatherhood.

Let’s dive in!

[00:01 - 10:27] Opening Segment

When your surname is a natural pun

Why Ned wants to talk about Fatherhood

Surviving journey as a father of 5

Ned’s desires came true as a father

The answer to why dads do not step into their role

[10:28 - 20:20] An extra layer of soft space for fathers

Being vulnerable and showing up for youths

Men must balance their vulnerability and strength

Be curious with men’s group

Ned showing up as himself

Ways they can fathers invite themselves in

Men need to be needed

Dudes feel alone - more than all of us know

[20:21 - 33:53] A constant surrender

Some men get angry when called to attention

Let the dads fulfill their role

There’s zero destination for most people

What Ned is up to right now

Men, realize who you really are

Please wait for Ned’s children’s books

A long, good marriage is possible

[33:54 - 39:21] Closing Segment

What masculinity means for Ned

Ned is compassionate

How Ned wants to show up for others and himself

Final words

Watch out for the upcoming episodes

Connect with Ned:

Visit his website www.rebelandcreate.com

Tedx Talk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L3cr-W8BGo&t=1s

Follow his Instagram and shoot him an email at ned@rebelandcreate.com

Work with me and find me at www.sarahhipps.com or connect with me through my social media:

Instagram

Facebook

YouTube

Linktree

Tune in next week for more thoughts, ideas and guests that can help you lead a life without self sabotage and with more power!

Tweetable Quotes:

“I have a great dad.
Welcome to another episode of the Show Up with Sarah Podcast!

Today’s guest is my friend, Nicolette Bernardes. This episode is the Part 2 of “Creating a Safe Container for People to be Honest” episode that aired last week. Here’s a bit about Nicolette:

Nicolette Bernardes is many things; wild woman on a journey; truth seeker + speaker, artist, writer, emotional body healing guide to name a few. She creates and holds space— inviting us to explore what our own authentic Truth is, and empowering a reconnection to that truth. She is the human behind Soul Filled Space LLC, a container for exploration, healing and growth to take place as well as the voice and creator of Relentlessly Authentic Radio— a podcast created with the intention to bring humanity back into the forefront, through talking about all human things…

Over the last decade, she has coached others through, as well as embarked on her own deep physical, emotional, and spiritual healing journey. Her purpose in this life is to experience the full depths and spectrum of humanity, allowing herself to feel it personally and through witnessing those around her. In turn, she is able to guide others’ on their unique journey home to their authentic self, empowering and inspiring them to take ownership of their emotions and healing journey; helping them to recognize that they have the power to transform their lives from within and teaching them how to access this power.

Her current client work includes 1:1 Release + Reconnect integrated healing sessions and Sacred Wheel Journeys, utilizing the practice of Experiential Astrology. She is also creator and facilitator of Soul Filled Space retreats and workshops [coming 2022]

Let’s dive in!

[00:01 - 00:37] Opening Segment

Welcome to the episode!

We continue our conversation with Nicolette

[00:38 - 39:33] A Healing, Safe Space with Nicolette

Lovingly hold the part of yourself

Birth is traumatic

Sensitivity is a challenge and a superpower

We have a fluid Energy

True and authentic reaction

Men have had a lot of trauma under women too

How has Nicolette evolved from who she was before?

Don’t shame others for their experiences

I and Nicolette share our personal experiences of assault

Truth is not comfortable

[39:34 - 46:05] Closing Segment

How Nicolette wants to better show up for herself and others

Watch out for the upcoming episodes

Subscribe to the podcast and follow me through the links below

Final words

Tweetable Quotes:

“The reason that birth is so traumatic is because we come out from this nice little, cozy, warm, dark space in the womb out into this cluster of this world.” - Nicolette Bernardes

“We are not designed to sit still, we are designed to move.” - Nicolette Bernardes

“If this was relaxation I have never experienced relaxation before.” - Nicolette Bernardes

connect with her:

www.nicolettebernardes.com

@relentlesslyauthentic https://www.instagram.com/relentlesslyauthentic/

@soulfilledspace https://www.instagram.com/soulfilledspace/

Checkout her podcast on all major platforms

Work with me and find me at www.sarahhipps.com or connect with me through my social media:

Instagram

Facebook

YouTube

Linktree

Tune in next week for more thoughts, ideas and guests that can help you lead a life without self sabotage and with more power!

Welcome to another episode of Show Up with Sarah! Today we will be chatting with Jose Lugo who is now 34 years old. He would join an L.A. street gang when he was 16, and would be convicted and sentenced to 5 years in prison at the age of 18. When he was paroled from prison, he vowed to himself that he would never go back and dreamed of one day telling the stories of his peers

In this episode, Jose shares with us how he would go through life never fully understanding the value in his own story. At the age of 31 he would return to jail for a D.U.I, and after his 3-day incarceration, he had lost all hope. He took inventory of his life and saw himself only as a criminal with no value. On the brink of taking his own life, he cried out to God and was able to remember a simple truth that he had believed as a child - that he as a person had inherent value and that his story had meaning. It was at that moment that he was able to find the value in his story once again.

Jose is the founder and lead creative of We Are All One Story. He currently travels the country listening to and sharing peoples stories. He also just finished his memoir, Love, Faith and Violence: A True Song and Story.

Welcome to another episode of the Show Up with Sarah Podcast! Today is going to be a solo episode because I feel compelled to discuss with you guys the idea of surviving vs. thriving. I decided that I wanted to discuss this because it's something that I noticed so much with not just my clients, but with everybody, myself included. And when I talk to people about surviving, usually the people who come to work with me, is because they have set in a survival technique or tactic that is now hindering themselves. Which now needs to be shifted from survival to thriving.

In this episode we will be talking about the difference between surviving and thriving, and how to switch from the former to the latter. Make sure to tune until the end, because I will be sharing a lot more personal stores that I’m sure you can learn something from. Let’s dive in!
