Piel’s origin story is all about family. Today I’ll be talking to Antony Zito in Governor’s Island. Zito is a portrait painter and member of the non-profit four heads. Zito ran a gallery and portrait studio on Ludlow Street through 2006. but gentrification and the hike of rents made him give away the space, not before throwing the party of the year!

He spends his time in Manhattan in his pickup truck and creates pop-up spaces where he paints portraits on the streets of New York and at events. The New York Post has called his portrait paintings “sensual” and his renderings of people on recycled materials other than canvas have prompted The Village Voice to refer to him as “a master of the found object”.

Today I’ll be talking to Dana Eudy from Field Apothecary in Germantown, New York. Before calling the Hudson Valley home, Dana and her family lived in Gowanus Brooklyn where she worked in Photography & Advertising.

She was growing as many herbs she could in her backyard in Gowanus. She started using herbs in her daily life in teas and noticed how her family was not getting sick, and how most of the herbs we have available in stores are from overseas. Drawn to the desire to raise her kids closer to nature and inspired to develop her intuitive self, she moved to Germantown with her husband and children and started Field Apothecary.

Daniel’s chocolate factory is one of the most fascinating places you’ll find in this neighborhood: the smells captures once you enter the store and the where the magic happens is just there, in front of you.

Matt Dilling is founder of Brite Lite Neon Studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Matt is also known as the "The Neon King of New York," his fascination with electricity started at the early age of 3 when he asked for a chocolate outlet on his birthday. He worked as an electrician during his teenage years and got introduced to the art & craft of neon at an early age with Craig Craft in Washington DC.

I spoke with Matt about the early years of Brite Lite Neon studio, how his spends part of his time as a biodynamic beekeeper and the lessons he has learned from his clients in all this years.
