On Monday, August 29, 2011 Dale Beatty, John Gallina and three other veterans appeared on the cover of Time Magazine with the headline, "The New Greatest Generation, How Young War Veterans Are Redefining Leadership At Home." That same evening I attended a local event to honor John and Dale along with the Mayor, a United States Congresswoman, The Chamber of Commerce President, area veterans and several friends. Seven years earlier, these two friends from high school almost lost their lives with the North Carolina National Guard in Iraq, when their Humvee was blown 200 feet in the air by an antitank mine. John suffered a severe brain injury and Dale lost both legs. To me this is a story of triumph after tragedy, when after returning home they determined to create Purple Heart Homes, blessing disabled veterans from all wars who desperately needed handicapped accessible homes. In the process, the hope and encouragement they exude has now spread nationwide. Sadly, Dale Beatty unexpectedly passed away suddenly at the age of 39 due to complications from his war injuries.

Ever since high school back in Rochester, New York I had always dreamed of being a disc jockey. Late at night, lying in bed, I could pick up WLS Chicago on my little transistor radio. Once a Midwest farm news station, they created history as a pioneer rock and roll station of the '60's with legendary radio DJ's. The Beatles and the British Invasion had landed on the airwaves in Chicago and every other American city.

It was a Tuesday, not long after four in the afternoon on August 16th, 1977. My General Manager, Tom burst into the on-air studio at KCNW Kansas City and handed me a slip of paper he had just ripped off the Associated Press wire service. "Here's, stop what you are doing and read this." So I faded out of the record I was playing and flipped on my microphone, "Breaking news, this just in. Elvis Presley was found dead today at his Graceland home in Memphis. He was 42 years old." From those humble beginnings my radio career spanned three decades and ten stations from the East the the West Coast. I'm forever appreciative of the encouragement that my G.M. Tom Schulte poured into my life that would change everything.

Destination disease causes a person to always search for happiness somewhere in the future.

For example, when I graduate. When I meet my soulmate. When I pay off my mortgage. When I get the promotion. When I retire. Then I’ll be happy.

The prime symptom of destinations disease is discontentment.Those infected by it postpone joy until some distant occasion that may never even transpire.

"Sooner or later we must realize there is no ideal destination, no one place to arrive at once and for all.The true joy of life outdistances us. So stop pacing the isles and counting the miles. I am a 49-year-old blind gentleman who grew up in a family of carnival owners. All I ever wanted to do was to continue in my father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and be part of the family business.

As you can tell by reading this, that isn’t where I ended up. I did help in the business over the years, but couldn’t sustain it after the early death of my father (who had lung cancer). I then turned to helping people sell their amusement equipment. I do that on my other site,

I started blogging to promote that site and met a lot of wonderful people in the blogosphere. They told me that I had an amazing story and many commented on how I inspired them. They finally convinced me that I had a bigger purpose in store for myself.

So, I started this second blog, and in it I share more of my personal journey, struggles, and triumphs. I also got noticed by a lot of people and have appeared as a guest, an interview subject, and a motivator on many different sites. My Interviews and Articles page lists these places.

I do my best to help others, and do so mostly by encouraging them to take steps towards their ultimate goal, or to continue on the path they have started.

I am now offering coaching to help people who are stuck and frustrated with not being able to find their passion or follow their dreams once they have determined what they want in their lives.

I am also available to speak to groups. I believe that by sharing the story of my personal growth and transformation, it will motivate and inspire anyone who hears it.

Coach Cam landed his first industry job in Houston, his hometown with The Houston Texans in the marketing department. From there, he hit the ground running, taking the skills and knowledge he gained with him to the athletic construction industry, working in sales and marketing.

Answering his entrepreneurial calling, he soon launched 5 Star Academy where he began his speaking career, writing curriculums, and consulting.

His success lead him to his first coaching post. Developing a diverse skillset Coach Cam entered into the NPO space initially as a contract trainer, but eventually as a lead trainer. In addition to speaking across the country in this role, he developed a Corp of trainers, managed events and programming and oversaw grant execution for the Houston Chapter of the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Again missing the sideline, he was called to KIPP Houston High School where he served as head coach and athletic director. Finding instant success, Coach Cam propelled 8 of the 10 varsity sports into post season tournaments and left as the school’s all time winningest coach.

Having checked off a major milestone, Coach Cam launched the company Coach Cam and sought to become a highly touted public speaker. Coach Cam began racking up appearances with dozens of NBA, NFL, and MLB clubs. In addition to Final Four and Super Bowl appearances. Soon after USA Football called and offer him a role as a Master Trainer. The Houston Texans reentered the picture and made Coach Cam their Play Safe Coach.

Retracing his time in athletic construction Coach Cam applied the disruption model and launched Texas Athletic Construction. Using the revenue generated from commercial and residential projects to fund his philanthropic endeavors which include the Coach Cam Cares: scholarship program, turkey drive, and Christmas wishes.

In 2019 Coach Cam published his first book, Alpha:REDEFINED 12 Servant Leadership Principles of Legendary Leaders. 2020 finds Cam at the helm of Texas Athletic Construction and Coach Cam.

As far as current projects, mid year Coach Cam released the E-Course Win the 1st Quarter of Your Day: Playbook for Wealth, Health, and Success. What started as a passion project grew into a full fledged digital magazine. Crown and Glory, an aesthetic based luxury lifestyle magazine boasts more than 1,000 subscribers.

More than the commercial success, Coach Cam prides himself on the impact of his work in the community. He developed the FLAG (Football League All Girls) program to break inequality barriers. He lead the Clinton Foundation initiative Access to Sports Coalition, which sought to eliminate sports deserts in the Houston Area. He served on Harris County Sports Authority committees that brought awareness to the World Corporate Games and Scotland vs USA rugby match in 2018.

In 2019 Coach Cam was recognized as a finalist for the Upstart Business Award (Greater Houston Black Chamber), he was honored to receive the Hustle Capacity Award (Urban CEO), Most Stylish Houstonians of 2019 (Houston Style Magazine). In 2020 Coach Cam was accepted into the NAACP NextGen Leadership Program.

Not long after the Great Recession of 2008 a small radio station in North Carolina saw a huge need among struggling local businesses trying to stay alive. One day in a brainstorming meeting the Commerce Club was born. Within months, over 400 businesses joined this networking group to connect and refer to each other. In 1987, after getting one of the lowest grades on his first MBA exam, Rick developed his purpose statement. The Purpose statement read in part:

"I will strive for and share the benefits of Continuous Improvement in my life, my families, and those in my circle of influence."

That Purpose statement helped him to become the youngest hire into a 30 person Continuous Improvement consulting company. Over 32 years, Rick helped grow that company into a well recognized 230 person Continuous improvement company.

He retired in 2017, as the COO of the Americas and the second largest shareholder.

Living by his Purpose statement, Rick has achieved success in all areas of his life. Rick has run 14 marathons including qualifying and running in the 2003 Boston Marathon.

Together with his family, he recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. He loves striving for peak performance in order to accomplish his financial, spiritual, relationship and physical goals.

 Epilogue From my blog "Old Guys Do It Better"

It had been 39 years since these old buddies got together. When they last worked as a team they had achieved fame and fortune beyond their wildest dreams. Even though their "corporation" only lasted four years.

No, it wasn't about some super geeks in the Silicon Valley creating a new PC. Bill Gates was 13. Michael Dell was 3 years old. South African Elon Musk hadn't been born yet. The internet wouldn't arrive on the scene until much later.

You might say they were the cream of the crop of young talented executives plying their skills in the marketplace of the incredible 60's. Now these old men who were literally in their personal 60's decided to have a little reunion in May of 2005.

Their names? Jack Bruce who was recovering from a liver transplant, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton. Their business? Music. Their company name? Cream. Their goal? The reunion concert. Four incredible nights at Royal Albert Hall in London. A huge success. Sold out in less than a week.

During one performance, Eric Clapton exclaimed amidst the massive applause, "Thanks for waiting all these years. We're going to do I think every song we know. We didn't go for very long. The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune cut us off in our prime."

At that point Jack Bruce burst in, "This is our prime, what do you mean?"

I have met some people who have turned 40 and think they are "over the hill." Or on the slippery sliding slope sending them into gray hair and old age. I've seen relatives who walk in slow, calculated steps, bent over, full of stress, wrinkled and weary looking as if they were 90 and they're barely 50.

Is it guitars and drums that keep people young or what? Not necessarily. My mother turned 81 that year. She still drove her little green Honda, played cards with her friends and very active in her church.

Well then, is it clean living? No, George Burns was performing right up to age 100. George said, "I don't believe in dying. It's been done. I'm working on a new exit. Besides, I can't die now - I'm booked." and "Don't stay in bed, unless you can make money in bed."

Rodney is a husband, father, cyclist, blogger and podcaster from Perth Western Australia.

"I work full time for Compassion Australia, releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name."

He has crossed Australia 6 times by bike as well as cycling in Canada and making two trips to cycle in India.

"I had quite an experience back during the 2008 global recession, seeing Compassion at work first hand. Our group had to be evacuated from Haiti during food riots. After I graduated from college at The Citadel, where I played NCAA Division I basketball against Michael Jordan and James Worthy at University of North Carolina in 1982, the year they won the championship, and played against Jim Valvano, coach of 1983 N.C. State National Champions.

Right out of college, I was employed in the Marketing Department at the corporate headquarters of Wendy’s International in Dublin, Ohio

From there, I worked in hospital administration for Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

 After getting married and moving to California for my wife's job, I became the Customer Service Manager for an academic publishing company in Santa Barbara. After our daughter was born and we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, I became a police officer with the Cincinnati Police Department, where I was a SWAT Hostage Negotiator.

"But my greatest challenge began in early 2012 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, which presented on the bottom of my foot. By the time the melanoma was detected, it had metastasized to a lymph node in my groin. Because my cancer is so rare (only about 6,500 people are diagnosed with this form of malignancy in the U.S. each year), I was treated at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center."I had two surgeries to remove the tumors, and after I healed, I was put on a weekly injection of the drug, Interferon, to help keep the disease from coming back."I took those weekly injections for four years and seven months before the Interferon became so toxic to my body that I ended up in the Intensive Care Unit with a fever of 108 degrees. Fortunately, expert medical care saved my life."The Interferon gave me severe flu-like symptoms for two to three days after each injection. I lost fifty pounds during my therapy, was constantly nauseous, fatigued, and chilled, my ability to taste food significantly diminished, and my body constantly ached. This misery went on for over 1,660 days!There were times I felt so poorly and was in so much agony that I prayed to die. Each day was a struggle to use my mind to override my body's apathy and distressI realize pain and discomfort can beat you to your knees and keep you there if you let it. But I also came to appreciate that I could use my hurting and anguish to make me stronger and more resolute.I was no better at dealing with pain and discomfort than the next person. But every day, I found a way to survive, with the knowledge that I would need to do it again the following morning.”

We did not know that we both attended the 20th Anniversary banquet of Lake Norman Young Life. And Tim was also at the Memorial Service for J.D. Gibbs, Joe and Pat's son who was a close friend of ours. My wife Carole and I were the founding committee chairpersons for the first five years. Ironically, the volunteer high school students who served dinner that night were not even born yet when this area started. Wow!

So what would you say really stands out to you about what makes your town so special, that our friends across North America and around the world may not be aware of? Actually my wife is a Costa Rican. She's from a large town called San Isidro, which is about 30 minutes away from Dominical.

The name of the area has been changed to the Ballena Coastline. That includes Uvita, Dominical all the way down to Ojochal. This amazing beautiful coastline that is attached by a road that goes all along the coast. You've got these great little towns. You've got great beaches. It's an area where the whales come and breed every year.

We've got great scuba diving, phenomenal little restaurants and you can really be at the beach at one day in the morning and then you can drive within 30 minutes and be at one of the highest peaks in Costa Rica or about an hour and you can be at five amazing waterfalls in Costa Rica.

And then you can be at the highest peak which is called Mount Chirripó, Costa Rica.

So you can really go from beachfront all the way up to five thousand feet or even higher to an amazing area which is just beautiful. If you want to be at the beach and hot or you want to get up the mountains become cool. The small town of Dominical itself has grown at a very slow pace over the last couple of years. I've been here about 21 years now and it is continuing to grow at a pace that's comfortable for everybody. You've got new restaurants coming in, but it's still a small town. It’s a very Bohemian small feeling. It's got a great farmers market every Friday which is amazing. They have music and vegetables and everything you can imagine.

We've also got a great organic store, which we call our Whole Foods. And then you've got the array of different kinds like Indian food.

Great surf. There's great mountain biking. There's great dirt biking. It's a phenomenal place to come for paragliders. At any given night you're not just going to the town of Dominical.

You go 30 kilometers north of us you've got Manuel Antonio, which is amazing national park, the marina, another array of great restaurants, things going on. And to the south of us we have Ojochal, Uvita which has all the beaches and everything, and restaurants as well. There's just so much to do in a small area. And then within two hours south of us you have the whole Osa Peninsula which opens up to you, Pavones, Montopalos, Golfito, another large marina project there. So we're kind of that in between, you know you've got the Golfito Marina the Manuel Antonio Marina and then you've got Jaco which is about two hours north of us now. In that stretch is kind of consider us like the little French Riviera you've got where the mountains come down to the ocean and then they get real steep. You get amazing views that great jungle atmosphere which you would think of Costa Rica and it's just a beautiful place to be.

A good friend of mine speaking of Uvita, he moved here from California, Navy Veteran and he had a great experience using your Coldwell Banker office to purchase his house. He's got a great things to say about you guys and what you could do and. I come from California myself. Did my undergrad at University of Santa Cruz, and we used to love to see the whales and the wildlife out there. It's an amazing adventure.

At my first big radio show job in Kansas City, I realized I needed to make more each month to take care of my son's medical bills. So I went into the General Manager and asked for a raise. He said that I could give myself a raise if I took myself off the air with my morning show, I could join the sales staff and give myself a raise.

One of the best investments he made was to take the sales team to see Zig Ziglar at a stadium event for sales people. I have since gone to Zig's amazing events every other year for forty years.
