Merritt has always led a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious life - a life lived loud enough, she always was precocious. From being fascinated with ballerina to being a gymnast to becoming an actor, her volume was always set at 11.

It doesn't mean that her life has been devoid of hardships as she's lived her share of hardship and loss.

It's the interplay between how she has shown up front stage and back stage, experiencing ebullience and sorrow, and navigating these ups and downs and all-arounds that gives this episode so much texture. It's that texture is probably why she's such an incredible coach.

Ingrid never really fit in a box or category. She was born and raised in Mexico and then went to Texas for boarding school. So at times, she was too Mexican for the norms of an American boarding school. And in returning to Mexico, she was almost too American for her Mexican colleagues. Either she was Mexican, or she was an American.

And while she admits that she initially struggled with the "either/or" mentality, Ingrid began to think about what a "both/and" mindset is - one where she claims an identity where she was both American and Mexican and beyond.

To fully embrace a "both/and" identity, Ingrid needed to unlearn the categories and boxes that limit so many of us. As a result, this mindset has changed the way she views social justice, identity and spirituality.

"Grit is a variable that is interchangeable. And we all have it. We have to choose to activate it and choose to thrive as a result of tapping into our grit." - Dr India White

A sixteen-year-old, India arrived home and knocked several times for her mom to let her in. She was exhausted after working a late Christmas Eve shift.

She knocked again. No answer.

Tears began to run down her face. In shock, she walked elsewhere. Through no fault, India was kicked out by her mother, who battled addiction.

She didn't know how to make it, and understandably so. She was just a teenager.

Yet her faith and grit helped her to focus on her academics.

Her faith and grit helped her grieve the loss of four family members while in the shelter.

And her faith and grit helped her to persist to complete, not one degree but three degrees from the University of Florida.

Meet Sonal, a mother of four boys.

During her pregnancy, Sonal was the Hollywood prototype of a pregnant woman - a perfectly round belly, glowing skin, and luscious flowing hair. But life after birth was much different for Sonal. Postpartum tore her apart physically, emotionally, and mentally - leaky, engorged breasts accompanied by waves of intense pelvic pain, diapers on both baby and her, a sense of isolation, and tears never portrayed in any Hollywood blockbuster.

Sonal is a physician, specifically a pediatrician further trained in neonatology. Her story concerning postpartum, or the 4th trimester, is not an isolated tale. Many women undergo it far worse.

Serena Williams, the greatest of women's tennis, almost died after her c-section. She developed a pulmonary embolism, a lung clot, requiring two surgical operations, and spent her first six weeks of motherhood in bed, half her 4th trimester.

In doing more research on the 4th trimester, the statistics are staggering.

• America’s maternal mortality rate of 23.8 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births ranks last in first world nations though spending the most in healthcare dollars.
• The lastest data reported in September 2022 showed that 22% mothers die in pregnancy, while 78% die after birth, with 25% in the first week of delivery. 
• 4 in 5 deaths are preventable.
• Interstate disparities find that a mother in Georgia has ten times higher chance of dying versus a California mother.
• Among black women, maternal mortality is three times higher than that of her white counterparts. Extrapolating the data further, a black woman’s higher education level and socioeconomic status does not protect her from these alarming disparities.
• Women are income-earners through outside avenues of employment as well as through traditional household duties. A new mother’s unexpected death not only leaves behind a newborn and maybe other children, but jolts a household’s economic foundation.  In 2022, the Council of Foreign Relations estimated that if women were part of the US labor force at the same rate as men, America’s economy would grow by $4.3 trillion in five years.  

As Dr. Patel says, "There must be a better way."

...and a better way for the 4th trimester will take everyone.

Folks say that highly conscious, super spiritual folks may cause electrical malfunctions to electronic devices. Well, Dr. Cyndi Maurer did this to my podcasting equipment. Our producer and sound engineer, Jofern, salvaged much of the recording, but he has asked for some time off.

...and it was SO worth it because Cyndi's interview was what the kids on Nickelodeon call "a banger."

This is why...

...growing up in northern California, Cyndi ostensibly lived the all-American dream, Nickelodeon, a great school, and incredible friends. family, and even fantastic neighbors. But it was during a conversation with her babysitter that Cyndi realized that there was something different about her. As her babysitter talked about god, a six-year-old Cyndi processed what she was hearing and asked, "Is God the little character next to everyone?"

I imagine that Cyndi's babysitter giving her a "WTF" face...

...because that's precisely when Cyndi knew that she experienced the world much differently than most people. She could tell when her neighbors were cheating, she could pick up on others' emotions, and, my favorite...she knew her friends' insecurities and could destroy them if they ever pissed her off.

Growing up in Kyiv, Ukraine, Henry Yampolsky always wanted to come to the United States. As a refugee whose family landed in Scranton, PA, some of those dreams didn't quite live up to his expectations. It was most apparent in seeing his mom go from a respected nurse in Ukraine to a nurse's aide who didn't hold as much respect in the US.

From those experiences, Henry wanted to become a lawyer to bring a voice to people like his parents. This sounds like a full circle moment, where Henry became the voice of the voiceless and would ride off into the sunset - the true American dream.

But becoming a lawyer wasn't the American dream for Henry. Instead, becoming a lawyer would lead to him feeling stuck and lost. And this was the beginning of a truly remarkable journey - one that, at times, Henry would experience on a motorcycle.

In the malaise and doldrums of feeling stuck, Henry and his wife watched a movie called "The Highest Pass," where Yogi guru Anand takes someone on a motorcycle trip through the Himalayas.

It lit Henry up. After a few happy, non-random happen-stances, he found himself with Anand...now his teacher...on a motorcycle...on the Himalayas...on the ride of his life.

Through continued spiritual practice, Henry's perspective of "us vs. them" began to melt away and replaced with another viewpoint - Everything is connected.

He discovered the integrative law movement through which he became a mediator - one who practiced radical compassion.

Michelle belonged to a great family - a family who supported her, provided the means for her to attend a great school, and provided her with the spiritual scaffolding to believe in something greater than herself. It was a perfect template to use as she became a mother of three. But it was with her son Ryan that providing wasn't enough. At first, Ryan was drinking with his friends in high school which could be seen as fairly innocuous since so many people drink in high school.

But down the line, drinking became more frequent and a heavy heroin and meth addition for Michelle's oldest son. Soon Michelle was struggling to understand her role as a parent and someone who didn't want to enable her son. She attended ALANON meetings but they didn't seem to land.

As she began to grow from her experience, Michelle wrote the book, Moms Letting Go Without Giving Up: Seven Steps to Self-Recovery. She knew she was on to something as she was flooded with thank you's from parents who struggled with the same issues. She created a Facebook group for families to know that they aren't alone.

And she'll be sharing her experience, strength and hope at TEDxFaurotPark with her talk How to Connect with an Addicted Loved One with PEACE.

Covered in blood and nauseated, Matt found a way to get help. It was a miracle that he was even alive. He had been shot from close range in the head, Matt heard someone say,

"You're not going to die tonight."

And the voice was right.

Matt did not die. In fact, he's currently flourishing in many domains of life.

But here's the rub. It's a big one.

Matt was actually person who pulled the trigger. He wanted to take his life.

In attempting to end his life, he realized that life was worth living. And he's helping people like you and me to think about what it means to stop chasing success;

to think about living the life to the fullest;

to find a ways to fill that god-sized hole that so many of us are searching to fill.

This is just the beginning of an incredibly deep dive in looking inward, in enjoying the moment with appreciation and levity, and in the buttons of our fifth-grade teachers.

Ep. 79 The Brace Leap Sideways w/ Cathlyn Melvin

Surrounded by textbooks and highlighters and notebooks, Cathlyn thought about why continuing through law school was getting increasingly more demanding. Yes, the pursuit of any terminal degree does come with an incredible amount of challenge. 

This, though, was something was different.

This was something that she could feel to her essence. 

On paper, being a law student at the University of Florida (aka Gainesville University) was perfect for her. She was used to creating powerful arguments from her debate club experience. People thought so highly of her writing that they asked for her to write copy for their businesses. And as perfect as those transferable skills was the fact that the University of Florida gave her a full scholarship to matriculate.

Furthermore, becoming a lawyer would bring her stability in her personal life.

Surrounded by her textbooks and highlighters and notebooks, Cathlyn realized that continuing to pursue her JD would put her on a hamster wheel where she'd futility chase happiness. 

Instead of running faster on the hamster wheel...

Instead of faking it until she made it...

Cathlyn made a peculiar, lifechanging decision. She made the decision to hop off the hamster wheel and took a brave leap sideways.

It granted her time to catch her metaphorical breath and time to revaluate where she wanted to go.

In less than a year, Cathlyn's brave leap sideways resulted in her giving an incredible TEDx talk, not to mention having a flourishing business as a marketer and copy writer. 

Things happen that fast when you are feeling great and moving in a direction where you aren't chasing happiness.

After hearing her TEDxOcala talk and having her on the Golden Mic Podcast, I've been thinking about what areas of my life am I trying to fulfull another person's expectations of me - or what areas of my life am I settling for.

As long as he can remember, Tal Ben-Shahar wanted to be a professional athlete. His parents supported that with one caveat - he had to do well in his academics.

Tal did just that. He played squash in college and was doing quite well academically at Harvard.

Until the day came that he was no longer quite well. Though young in age Tal's body began to break down, which dashed away his professional dreams of being an athlete. His perfectionism and lack of knowing his major overwhelmed him with stress.

At one of the biggest crossroads of his life, Tal asked himself, "What can I do to be happier?"

The rest is history. He got his PhD and taught at Harvard. Not only was an instructor, he taught the most popular classes in Harvard's rich history. He taught happiness.

After authoring some wildly successful books, Tal leads the Happiness Studies Academy, which is open for all.

Tal's work has influenced me profoundly, but I did my best to keep my fan-boying down to talk about a few things, namely...

And in that micro-moment, GP did just that. He began to shrink. He shrank so much that GP was in the river viewing something incredibly profound. He saw that the molecules of the river’s pristine water were not bonded with the pollution. There was a clear distinction between the two.

It was a metaphor for GP’s life.

Despite living an ostensibly purposeless life…

Despite the wreckage that drugs were causing him…

Despite his first memory of being tied to a bed and consequently being punished for wetting it..

GP was perfect. He was loved.

The God-sized hole began to shrink. He started a long journey of healing.

Here’s the thing, everyone experiences early trauma whether quickly or slowly through micro-aggressions. They’re stored in the body. When it reaches a certain threshold, the soul gets disconnected.

Everyone experiences it. As GP says. “Nobody gets out of childhood alive.” Not me. Not you.

Ep. 64 The Genocide of the Modern Healer

Tamara Arnold knew there was something wrong with her son, Ethan. The dead give away? His pupils would dilate, and any coloration of his eyes turned black. She turned towards psychology to ameliorate his condition. What parent wouldn't want to see their child remedied of dark thoughts and functioning restored?

What Tamara didn't know is how much of her own self was in a dormant state. And as she awakened to her psychic gifts, she realized that the Westernized approach to mental health was fractured and inadequate. It dawned on Tamara that her son Ethan took on dark energy. He took on dark energy to protect his mother. And as a result, he was possessed for several years as she continued to "remember" who she truly was. 

If you heard the last podcast with Tomas Garza Episode 63, you'll hear him talking about "remembering." Or if you've heard my Speakers Who Dare talk on panarchy, this idea of remembering and revolting is present in everything.

And in remembering Tamara realized the ancestral trauma that had been forced to be suppressed. And in stuffing down the genealogical grief, anger, and sadness, Tamara realized that much of society has forgotten who they actually are. And as a result, we've become fractured, numbed out, and living a monotone experience of keeping our sh*t together or as Abby Havermann calls it, Impression Management in Ep 55.

For Tamara, she remembers her lineage of the healer and the witch - ancestors who experienced the genocide of the healer. This is why she helps spiritual entrepreneurs bust through the energy blocks in their chakras so they can make a bigger impact in the world with their epic missions. 

And in diving even deeper, Tamara meditated in the Colorado mountains when Spirit spoke to her. 

As she claimed her birthright...

As she realized that modern society doesn't have the capacity to honor empaths, healers, witches...

Ep. 63 Come Home When Ir Gets Dark w/ Tomas Garza

In December 2013, Tomas Garza received a gift. He regained in a hospital bed after being T-boned by someone driving at 60 miles per hour. His hip bone was completely shattered. For years he ran away from toxicity, his parents' fights, his mother's alcoholism.

Turning 15 and "officially" getting his drivers' license gave him even more perimeter to be away from the house.

Tomas made sure he could get out for good when he aced his academics and left for college and never having to come his childhood "home' when it got dark. He graduated from Law school, which never felt his calling. It was just like Tomas as a kid walking around Albuquerque and not having any particular career aspirations. As a family and child custody mediator, he was growing tired and knew there was something more to this life.

Tomas wrestled with quitting and looking for something that lights him up, or staying and being rewarded with steady clients and a steady income.

That's when Tomas received his gift in the form of a horrific accident, it gave him time to think. Tomas left his unfulfilling job and started to explore again. And the "remembering" events he had as a child started to make sense. 

And as the universe would have it, his relearning to walk even though he walked every day before mirrored the return of "remembering" moments as a child.

"One foot at a time, shift your weight, hold onto the sidebars, pick your foot up. We got you."

Tomas thought about disembodied visitors that used to be with him in a particular room in his grandparents' house. 

"Ok lift your other foot...Great work Tomas"

John recalled an encounter with lights that had a consciousness. 

"Congratulations John. You back at 100%"

And in the remembering, John created his own house, not the toxic one he grew up in.

John took up podcasting about a year ago and revels in his guests having aha moments. He is also a producer and has two podcasts, "Decide to Transform" and "Our Conscious Playground" with co-host Lisa Berry.

Mark Mawhinney is snarky, has beliefs that many don't believe with, and mouthy. As a person on the path, I shouldn't agree with him at all. But I do. In fact, I like him. I appreciate him. And when it comes to my thoughts about coaching. I agree with him. If you listen between the jokes, the metaphors, the critiques you can see a person who unapologetically stands for something.

Who is telling you that you don't have to follow the leader or put on a persona to be a success. Listen for the tips he has on not people-pleasing, how to deal with haters, and how what I call Chuck E. Cheese coaches will need to step up their game in the next year. It sounds like a soveign, self-assured, relaxed, present, proud and grateful person to me. Not too for off from being "a person on the path" like me!

The doorbell rang. It was Payton with Chick-Fil-A. We munched a bit but were eager to get going.

He recalled wanting a Blue truck from Toys R Us and how his mother wouldn't buy it for him. Even better, she'd show him a five-year-old how to make money to buy the truck.

Many people would think Payton has had a charmed life, having two parents who are successful entrepreneurs. Instead, he talked about the "personality shapers" he's pushed through: the loss of his grandfather, be bullied relentlessly, and putting almost unfair pressure on himself to become successful like his parents.

By the age of 18, Payton started his real estate company, and by now, the multi-time entrepreneur was more than financially stable. But it didn't come without an expense Payton was burning out.

Now Payton is ready to launch his next venture, the Young Entrepreneurial Success (YES) Network. And he's using all the life lessons, personality shapers, in particular, his resilience, creativity, and intellect - to create a platform to inspire the next generation by being a positive example.

This doesn't even scratch the surface of how colorful and fun and real this episode is.

Ep. 60 We, The Gloriously Unique Outliers

As I spoke with Dr. Nadal, I kept scribbling the “normal” curve. In math, you know that line that starts to rise, peaks, and then slopes down. As Kevin spoke about disrupting societal norms, I kept redrawing the line to understand the concept. I flipped the normal curve on its head. The equation now was a U-shape. It appeared as the people who existed in the Western narrative's historical margins would become the new standard. And in turn, the historically dominant privileged groups would become the deviation. 

But that wasn’t what the author of Queering Law & Order and Filipino American Psychology, Second Edition, was talking about as he fluidly and proudly blurred the lines that distinguished his life as a comedian, professor, author, openly gay, Filipino-American and more. 

The normal curve vanished.

It brought me back to a scene fifteen years ago in a small doctoral cohort and not sharing the news that my Fil-Am band's new album release literally crashed our band’s website. It wasn't hard to do back then. But during our breaks, I’d call my Filipino-American buddies in sheer elation only to return to the class and sit quietly during the small discussion. And in recalling my own story, it reappeared: the normal curve.

Without density or pretense, Kevin talks about his newest book Queering Law & Order, stories of things that were deemed as criminal, morality-based, or binary. He flows into how forensic psychology pathology-based medical model intersects with criminal justice, often putting the letter of the law over logic. And like running water, he seamlessly turns into his new newest book, Filipino-American Psychology, Second Edition. It's previous iteration took the pressure off so many of us tokenized who were called on to explain, Filipino stuff we couldn't figure out ourselves!

And in a hilarious and poignant closing piece, Kevin talks off the cuff. And it is there the idea of being in an “either/or” world disintegrated. An ampersand appeared. In being in the moment with this fellow human, who has experienced his own set of ups, downs, and all-arounds, no-one person can be a standard. So we're all gloriously unique deviations. It’s not a perfect one, but it’s one that I choose to exist in and look forward to evolving with. It’s a place where I cease my drawing and overthinking for a second and look for the invisible tapestry that separates, made visible, toppling in joy.

Ep. 59 On Worthiness, Forgiveness, & Filipino-American Identity w/ Patricio Ginelsa

The last time producer Patricio Ginelsa premiered one of his movies in Hawaii, he got the news that his estranged father, Patricio Senior, was dying. When Patricio got to the Philippines his father was gone and his family had his viewing in a street. "You left ME for THIS?" Patricio thought.

Flashback a few years and Patricio's family was bankrupt and Patricio's mother wasn't very supportive of her son going to USC to pursue filmmaking. It was risky. Patricio agreed and applied to local colleges around Daly City, California, and applied to USC just to see if he'd get in.

He was accepted.

And by the time they took the college tour, Patricio's mom was talking to ever administrator trying to convince them that Patricio was destined for big things. She even wanted to play Patricio's VHS tapes of the kid hero's that would protect their neighborhood.

After graduating cinema production at USC, he became the Associate Producer of THE DEBUT and wrote/directed the feature LUMPIA. Ginelsa has directed over a decade’s worth of music videos, including the Black Eyed Peas: The Apl Song. He’s won Best Music Video (SDAFF) for his Native Guns “Champion” and the California Preservation Foundation Presidents Award for BEP “Bebot: Generation One”. His crowdfunded feature LUMPIA WITH A VENGEANCE makes its film festival debut this year.

But it was John Singleton's Boyz In Da Hood that inspired him to create LUMPIA and LUMPIA with a vengeance.

On the day this was recorded it was the last showing of LUMPIA WITH A VENGENCE in Hawaii, but the first showing in a drive-in. Patricio was nervous as any creative would be, that the experience was exact.

Ep. 58 Opening Davie Jones' Locker w/ Dave Chametzy

I put my favorite pen down - the one I used for taking notes on my guests and I swallowed nervously. My emotions well up to my eyes as tears naturally fell. I stared at my digits as I rubbed my thumbs together. I couldn't hold back anymore as one of the kindest, quirky and generous people I know - Uncle Dave, Dave the Davemeister, Cluberty Dave - talked about growing up being the odd man out, acceptance, and inclusion.

One of the most amiable people I know talked about being bullied. He spoke about not being upset when his family could only afford his sisters' dance lessons, which came at the expense of Dave playing baseball.

And that's when 13-year-old Dave met her. She was the sister of his classmate with whom he played basketball. One day, Dave came over to find none of his friends. He talked to their sister for a bit before asking her to see a movie. 

"I've been waiting for you to ask me out!" she responded.

And from that day forward, they were inseparable. Even when she went to Stanford, they racked up. She worked pretty hard that week, and Dave urged her to let off some steam and go to a party.

And that advice would haunt Dave for years...

Ep. 57 I'm Not Throwin Away My SHOT! w/ Dr. DeLon Canterbury

Ding dong! It was the doorbell to the Canterbury's house. Mrs. Canterbury looked at her husband with a "here we go again" look. It was Mildred, DeLon's grandma, trying to find her house. She was in dementia and couldn't recognize faces anymore.

But it was the kindness of a pharmacist who discovered that Mildred was prescribed an FDA black box warning medication that had a harmful drug interaction that threatened her life and should never be used in Dementia patients. The pharmacist fought for Mildred's health with her doctor.

The doctor eventually agreed to the pharmacist's recommendations

In two weeks, Mildred's dementia symptoms dramatically decreased. There was clarity when she spoke. And she would never get lost in her neighborhood again.

Up the road, as an undergraduate at Emory University DeLon Canterbury, who was taking Chemistry classes to become a pharmacist, heard about the pharmacist. It only solidified his confidence to become a pharmacist and advocate for his family in need.

Now working for a pharmacy chain was not what Dr. DeLon envisioned as it was on the brink of chaos filling 500-700 prescriptions daily, getting written up for trying to help patients, and getting written up again after being called the N-word.

Enough was enough, which is why DeLon started Geriatrx.org, a pharmacist consulting company that advocates for the patient, brings costs down, and even helps the caregiver take a breather. At GeriatRx every person is Mildred to DeLon.

And it's no surprise that he's appearing on media and being asked to be on Minority COVID Task Forces in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina.

Walking alongside 180 women, Becky sang, "We are the ones. We are the ones we've been waiting for." The collective effervescence of joy spilled over the hill at the farm and wilderness camp and flowed like a river to collect in a natural basin. This was the fame that Becky imagined when she told her good friend Shenna when they were ten-year-olds bonding in the rickety woods by Becky's house.

When I first heard that Becky, host of the Read to Me podcast, wanted to be famous, I was a bit taken back as I know her as an unpretentious scholar who gives thoughtful and bountiful feedback to Gateless writers.

But as she explained further in this episode, the meaning of "famous" was to be seen, heard, and recognized for her intelligence and her acumen.

Ep. 55 Impression Management w/ Abby Havermann

It was during one long night on a hard plastic cot on the floor of a jail cell that Abby came to terms with the life she had created, and the toxic voice inside her head which led her to do so. After all she reasoned on the eve of her arrest, she had married an unsocial, ambition-less, older man with whom she’d had almost nothing in common. But that was only how it began. The real fun started when her ex who had been in recovery for nearly twenty years, relapsed.

How did she get to this level of denial,

this level of covering someone else's ass,

succumb to this amount of mortification?

How did this become so much of a theatre of the absurd that at a classy get-together, her ex-husband, who was so hopped up on painkilers, caught on fire from a candle and had to be tackled by to the ground by another guest ruining the hosts fluffy white rug all while jazz music crooned in the background?

How did it get so bad that when tying his shoes - mind you, he was tying his shoes with no pants on - Abby would get shoved and slap him back, only for her to get cuffed and sent to jail?

Now, sitting on the cold floor of the jail cell she asked herself:

"What would drive me to marry someone I knew was all wrong for me?" 

Another voice answered, "Well who else would marry you?"

That response was a gift. Now she could identify the voice inside her that required releasing for her to live a new life.

And that's the story of how Abby, a couple’s therapist at the time, would get a divorce from her relapsing husband who, wait for it… was an addictions counselor. 

This episode was the first time Abby, a psychotherapist turned coach, and I actually spoke outside of our Gateless Writing group. 

Not only do we talk about her story, but we go deep into generational unworthiness, saving face, trauma, and so much more.

Ep. 54 Identity, Success, & ADHD w/ Cathy Rashidian

Through her 6-year old eyes, Cathy sat in the back of the getaway car as the Iranian regime dodged through traffic to apprehend her family. Month to month her family would secretly move to a new city helping other political activists. For her, this was like being in an action movie. But who wouldn’t feel like they were in a Bond movie when they were born in the middle of the Iranian revolution. That’s all she knew.

And after losing several family members, Cathy’s family was utterly fatigued from “fighting the good fight” and moved to Canada. In her teens, she was learning a new language and picking up new values, such as “the harder you work, the more success you’ll have.”

Into her twenties, Cathy started to question, why she was still struggling with friendships, conversations, and how to “show up” in the world.

The questioning didn’t stop until Cathy was diagnosed with ADHD. With that Cathy could create a community of care, some structure, and create some progress. 

She gained a deeper understanding of how to approach life transitions with curiosity and lean into the “how” and the “why” of a new situation, the possibilities become endless. Be open to seeing all sides of possibilities; you’ll be amazed by what’s on the other side waiting for you.

Ep. 53 The Drive To Success w/ Terri Maxwell

When she was six, Terri fell asleep with her head propped on the glass window. This wasn't the first time this had happened to her, but it was the first time was visited by a luminous, benevolent being. It guided her to get out of her adopted parents' pickup truck, push open the heavy doors of the old bar they were in, and command them to get out and take her and her brother home. I mean, it was a school night. And thanks to whatever visited her, Terri knew she was meant to succeed not languish.

A few years later, it was the final inning of a fast pitched softball game. Terri's blood boiled, not about the game, but about her inebriated father making a huge scene in the stands. Terri's coach noticed her, came over to her, and said, "Play to win."

And with a swing of the bat, Terri won the game.

She received another message from her coach who reminded her that she doesn't have to fight through the things laid out for her.

These experiences helped to shape who Terri is now.

And along the way, Terri has moved from victimhood to surviving to thrive. And by no means does this entail a fairy tale ending as Terri considers herself both a teacher and learner.

Today, Terri is CEO of Share On Purpose, an investment company that has created dozens of powerful brands, including ShiftCo.global – a powerful business growth community for conscious entrepreneurs.

The Spiritual Masochist w/ Bradford Scott Walton Pt 1

When he was four years old, Bradford Scott Walton moved with his family to California. By five, he had his first dream state vision. These dreams differed in two ways from our normal three-dimensional dreams. Some of them felt highly instructional, and others were in a black void with beings from other dimensions.

As Bradford grew up, he didn't struggle with school. In fact, there was just a knowing that he had. For example, he always knew there was a kind of river of knowledge above him that he can attach to a tube out of his head. He could predict numbers, information, and facts before they were told.

Even with these gifts, Bradford felt an incredible amount of loneliness and disconnection from his peers. And in one of his dream state visions, four of his sky homies, his galactic buddies, appeared. Bradford immediately contacted his healer Tina, who could speak and translate the conversation with the four beings in his dream.

They told Bradford that the loneliness and separation are real because he is an Aethos being like them. Bradford is going through an earth experience to understand it better. 

But it doesn't stop there as the Aethos beings revealed to Bradford where feminine and masculine were evolving. They were moving towards integrating the energies and creating a new being.

And while some indigenous cultures acknowledge the presence of a masculine and feminine side of a person, these dreams are actually quite radical in calling out living in a world masculine dominant which oppresses, suppresses, and devalues the female paradigm.

This is just an episode you have to hear for yourself...especially the part where Bradford describes in detail what it was like to be split in one of these dreams.

Another awesome episode that humans, moon people, Aethos beings from the 10th dimension, Syrian beings, maybe even a few Arcons, can all appreciate.

This instant classic kicks off with Selena opening space for Cordon to open up about his own spiritual journey and even invites him into dream analysis.

And in a flawless transition, Selena talks about once again being a black sheep trying to acquiesce to the status quo in her marriage - a union which was ripe for shadow work well after her divorce. In this divorce, Selena was gifted one last light bomb that disrupted and healed several fixed patterns to fit in and be accepted. It was the illumination point marking the transition from sheepish black sheep to towards an unapologetic shepherd, one of many, to lead us through the ostensibly tumultuous friction celebrating the arrival of the new earth.

The interview itself mimicked her unraveling and deep-diving into her soul's purpose. It's reminiscent of a ball made of tightly wound rubber bands, exploding out in different directions. You can almost see the disentanglement as she describes moving from a highly successful physically training business to one of a healer providing spiritual and emotional support to other black sheep.

Step. A student, feeling the isolation of being the only Latinx in her grade.

Step. A valedictorian who had just one more STEP to go.

Step. A brilliant all-American student and family member who could no longer keep the secret she had kept to herself for so long.

...Eileen is an undocumented person living in the land of the free and the home of the brave. STEP!

As a valedictorian, she was in the pole position to receive scholarship money, that we're allocated only for “the documented.” This didn’t prevent her from going to college, as she now is a student who will proudly walk across the stage of the College in which she attends, stop on the red dot, and proudly declare her voice.

Carson Hamilton is making lemonade out of lemons. No really. I’m not being metaphorical here. He is LITERALLY making lemonade out of lemons. As a six year old, he was making fresh manually squeezed thirst-quenching lemonade.

And his lemonade business wasn’t even his first stab at entrepreneurship. At an even younger age, Carson and his brother took the styrofoam packing material from their new refrigerator. They cut it up. Taped pieces together. And went around the neighborhood to sell it as modern art!

Carson first heard of TEDx when he was serving lemonade while the founder of https://lemonadeday.org (Ya. It’s kind of a big deal!) gave his TEDx talk.

The universe is awesome isn’t it. And it’s benevolent too as the person serving lemonade at a TEDx event will be giving his own talk in Ocala.

He has an enthusiastic demeanor - one that you may find with anyone his age. But don’t let his youthful energy fool you. 

There’s something about Carson. It’s not childlike wonderment. Or is it Pollyanna-esque daydreams. If I had to put a finger on it, it’s the unwavering belief that he has in himself to do whatever he wants. And that kind of sovereignty and trust is something people three times his age would wish for. 

So when he says he aspires to be a sports commentator, I believe in his conviction.

What is truly amazing is that before the pandemic Carson was giving workshops to second to sixth graders on how to create their business, and he’s starting them off by teaching them how to successfully run a lemonade stand. So if Carson’s dream that every kid gets entrepreneurial experience out of the classroom, pretty soon EVERYDAY WILL BE LEMONADE DAY!

hen Barbara Fitos divorced her husband, she followed her father’s footsteps to become a banker. But unlike her father, she worked in HR and became a banker with people, not with money.

Though she was an introvert, she enjoyed working with people. Then one of the top executives in her company challenged her to “pay her civic rent” by investing her time, treasures and talents in something she was passionate about.

That’s where the doors busted wide open as Barbara volunteered a the local library, put together women’s groups, and worked with literacy.

Her reputation preceded her, so much, that she ran for office as a county commissioner. Barbara’s civic rent was indeed paid as she beat the 12 year incumbent. Winning the election was just the beginning as Barbara was the only female and only democrat in the commissions office. It’s led her to have a vision of the community, her community, coming together and celebrating it’s amazing diversity, which will only happen with inclusivity.

A few years ago Shereese (Reesey) watched the women’s 4 X 4 to the Olympic qualifier and in the last leg of the event, runner dropped the baton. But her reaction to the baton drop wasn’t one of disappointment or mild sadness. It was an ugly cry. And when she had an opportunity to process her reaction, Reesy realized that she was the one going in circles around the same track. She likened her life to being the baton, one that was less an person and more an object.

To be specific, she was holding up a facade as a prisoner's wife. Her husband was incarcerated. She was hiding that to everyone. As a result, Reesy felt invisible - lost in her husband’s narrative.

This became the activation energy, the catalyst, the ingredients for her to find her own story.

Reesy has an incredible story about finding her voice and having conversations with ostensible different people with different perspectives.

Born to a teenage mom in a loving household, Cindy grew up on what she calls “the other side of the creek." And she didn’t realize it until she went to a middle school, and she remembers the look on her dad’s face - one that he couldn’t provide. And it was there that Cindy wore her blue-collar status as a badge of honor. It was then that her drive to fight for the underdog was ignited.

Couple that experience with a memory of her father saying, “Everybody deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”

These moments inspired Cindy to practice social justice law.

Through person epiphanies, she felt as if something was missing. When she gave to that, she found so many women in the same boat - conditioned to play small from an early age and in a male-dominated world.

Cindy has an awesome story and not only talks about masculine and feminine. She also talks about the divine feminine and masculine that, if integrated, the world would be in more balance.

When he was in the 3rd grade Eliezer (EJ) Nieves watch in awe as buddy Sam draw characters from EJ’s favorite arcade game, Final fight. It was there that EJ realized that creation is cool.

He approached engineering in the same way. But like Belger, the last boss in Final Fight, math became EJ’s achilles heal.

EJ worked as a school teacher, but continued to create. He’d attend local Comic Cons to show case his art. That’s where his art caught many an eye. One of them was Stan Lee’s handler. As living life in passion would have it, not luck, EJ and Stan Lee were soon swapping art and autographs.

EJ is an incredible person of faith, family, and passion. And this episode felt like two friends catching up.

Not only is he giving a TEDxOcala talk on November 7, but he’s continuing to obliterate the stigma of the starving artist by opening his gallery on the very same day.

It makes it hard to believe that Staci was shy when she was young. Not only was she shy, but she was born with cystic fibrosis, which was terminal 50 years ago. But her family believed in faith over fear. 

And what happened was nothing short of a miracle. The lungs that were vulnerable to illness became the power house to become a singer. And not just any singer, but one one that recorded five albums and performed on stages like broadway and the Olympics.

Staci has successfully been able to move her mindset from resilient to anti-fragile over her lifespan staging comebacks in her personal life and business. And as she says, “A dream without a plan is nothing without wishful thinking.”

Ep. 039 Black Lives Matter Because All Lives Matter w/ James Jones

If you told the young Jimmy Jones that he’d grow up to be a college professor telling his life story on a podcast, he wouldn’t believe you. Jimmy grew up in the segregated south, which gave him a narrow perspective of what he could accomplish later in life.

Through the encouragement of his cousin, as a pre-teen and teenager, James made it a personal goal to read all of the books in the tiny library in his town. And it was in that tiny library that James started to find his voice. Specifically, The Mis-Education of the Negro by Carter Godwin Woodson was particularly salient as it made the argument that education is the means for African-Americans to get out of their current subjugated roles in the greater society. This book became particularly salient as it moved James to attend the HBCU of Hampton University. As a student he was challenged by Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) to dig even deeper. And in his digging, James read The Autobiography of Malcolm X. It’s no surprise that Dr. Jimmy Jones is now Professor Emeritus of World Religions, Executive Vice President of the Islamic Seminary of America, and former Chair of both the Dept of World Religions and the African Studies Program at Manhattanville College. 

In this conversation, James breaks down the constructs of “us vs them” and puts the new perspective of “oneness” in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. Incredible!

In the act of living our lives, many of us don't how much emotions sticks. A little shame here. Some guilt over there. And the next thing we know, we're carrying those emotions, those sticky energies, around.

Enter Fiona Barr, a success coach that uses NLP and hypnotherapy in her practice.

She starts the episode with NLP & Hypnotherapy is like time traveling. Too much for me to explain but well worth the listen.

She then debunks the stigma that NLP is solely used by schwarmy and salesy greasy.

Instead, she talks about NLP as a place to connect clients as a report technique. Once the rapport is built, NLP can help clear blockages.

Next, for everyone who uses positive affirmations to no avail, Fiona explains why. Our emotions are lodged inside our subconscious, and we're trying to address the conscious part of the brain.

Fiona discusses hypnotherapy, to move from the conscious to the subconscious. And in that state, she can embed positive affirmations.

From there, Fiona uses herself as a case study - talking about getting over the guilt of being born and being a burden to her family or, as her psychiatrist said to her, "You live in a box of guilt."

And on bottom of that box of guilt sat Fiona's heart of gold, safely bubbled-wrapped for years.

"Where did you go Taylor?" her husband would say to her more times than she cared to mention. The child with the happy go lucky charisma, with the creativity to make grass tacos for her horses, the joyful nationally ranked track star, the bubbly eye-in-the-sky radio producer/reporter...had developed a nasty case of the angry entitled victim mentality.

And Taylor Proctor, who has an uncanny resemblance to that woman who told you that smoking is not allowed in Delta in-flight videos, admitted. She didn't know where to go or even where to start. So she googled it. She googled "how to be happy."

With the expertise mindset that she developed from track, Taylor knew that just because she made a decision to be happy didn't mean that it was devoid of work. And on the first part of her journey towards becoming a happiness mentor, and a damn good one, she realized two illusions.

1. There is the expectation that she should inherently be happy.
2. There is a "societal checklist" that she needed to make, and to check of the 2.5 children, the white picket fences made of ticky tacky, etc equated to more happiness.

But she didn't allow me, the positive psychologist, to wallow in negativity. Tonia describes all of these problems as being an insidious part of the idea that we are a fractured society with fractured individuals.

Throughout the interview, I pull this sparks of what life is like for Tonia now, and through and through it comes back to one of her major identities. Tonia is a recovering church girl.

A Recovering Church Girl Pt 1 w/ Tonia Adleta

I met Tonia in NYC as she was planning a networking event. And talk about cutting directly to the chase, we saw each other and immediately went into an intense, intuitive conversation about our lives - god, kids, entrepreneurship. 

This is the first part of Tonia Adleta's 2 part series The Recovering Church girl.

Born pre-mature, Tonia was dressed in dolls clothes. Her family moved over 16 times while growing up - sometimes she be the cool new kid in school, other times, not high on the homeroom's pecking order. 

The rock that her family stood on during that constant transition were within the walls of her religious family and her own family's beliefs about raising a child in the church. Not only was Tonia a part of the teen missionary. It was later called by the mainstream media a cult. That's when the cookie smashed.

But if you listen closely, there were some doubts creeping up about patriarchy and "submitting" that were not sitting well with Tonia. Insidious things that ate away at her conviction in religion. Listen to her reaction when I say submit, the unwinding of a system with quite a bit of hegemony, not unlike many systems, where dogma became too disruptive and Tonia, decided as a recovering church girl, to take a stab at spirituality internally.

I'm grieving. I lost my dad. And I was surrounded by my family this weekend. Not only was it a celebration of Pacifico Jr, my dad. There are so many of us, in pain, not suffering.

But it was an acknowledgement of generations.

How do you unsee something you just witnessed?

This week, I saw something on the internet that I deemed to be very sad. I saw a terribly wounded child confront another terribly wounded child. Neither had much of a semblance of personal power. So one child tried to exert his power and put the weight of the multiverse onto the other child's throat. I saw that other child expire his last breath into the cosmos.

And I can't unsee it.

I tried to get someone to help me unsee it. But it seemed like EVERYONE had seen it. And many other terribly wounded inner children started playing by the rules of radicals, which is quite sensibly when a perceived, stigmatized, tired "havenot" has no more fucks to give. I certainly can relate to being relegated to the moniker of a "havenot" in my life, but I'm surrounded by more haves, than havenots, like ANYONE - thin or thick skinned - who is reading this right now.

I used almost all of my "haves" to locate someone who could help me unsee what I saw. And I found, on the same internet, three people who hadn't yet seen the atrocity.

They are all the way in Costa Rica.

Two of them are the two children in this video, Christiano and Indy. Both of them vibrant, vulnerable, powerful, operating as one. The other is my friend Sara, who recorded this video. I intercepted her before she had access to any means of viewing what I was trying to unsee, and asked her to help me with my dilemma. So I skirted around the images, and asked her to give me some advice about my growing need to be a part of the "have" vs "havenot" movement or to just play my pithy "empowered to be un-enlightened" card.

I'm glad I intercepted her. Before the un-unseeable crawled to some of the more remote areas of Costa Rica,

Sara reminded me of THE POWER OF NEUTRALITY.

And taught me a song that soothed the terribly wounded inner child in me:

I release control 

and surrender 

to the flow 

of love 

that surrounds me.

That pretty much sums up the few hours I spent with Andres who was almost drowned by his biological father before he had a chance to truly live, and for much of his life, as you heard in part 1 of this, he lived confined in that stuffy metaphorical bathtub.

He also told me to fuck off in the previous episode, which most people, before this week wouldn't have the grapefruits to do. Well played king!

Now that we heard about the trauma, the pent up rage, in the last episode. Andres' became open to conscious leadership, new modalities for healing, and the ability to let a lot of stuff go.

It is an EPIC story filled with so many nuggets of wisdom and raw honesty.

Hey now.

There's a lot of info coming through right now, right? And amazing to see the power of quick decisions. This is the empowering part of this moment: we can choose to turn the volume up or down to an appropriate level so we can take daring, deliberate actions and not knee jerk reactions. Cool af.

What's comparatively less cool af is what Andres' biological father attempted to do to him when he was 2. 

This is not a podcast for the rigid minded. It is hard to get through - in terms of sound quality. It is not happy or fun to listen to, and the powerful vulnerability that Andres Valencia stands in is so relevant if you want to listen for it. 

There are times where Andres and I are both rigid, from my perspective, because we don't like the pretense of having a real conversation relegated to a canned recording. We're like awkward teens.

With that said, today's podcast could be quite satisfying for anyone is seeking to unsee something they did not want to see in the theatre of the absurd. I'm quite proud of what we co-created and am happy to serve this one up.

Dr. Andy Kazama was born in Juneau, AK. He grew up on his family’s fishing lodges where he developed a love of nature and biology. His undergraduate work was completed at Davidson College in NC, where he majored in Biology/Neuroscience. Dr. Kazama foolishly followed his wife to Houston Texas, where he discovered his intolerance for high temperatures, but also his love for translational research. He attended UT-Houston Medical School (Ph.D. program) in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy under the guidance of Dr. Jocelyne Bachevalier, and after one year, the Bachevalier lab (thankfully) moved to Emory, where he finished his degree in Psychology (Animal Behavior and Neuroscience). Dr. Kazama has dual appointments at Emory Psychology, as well as the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in the division of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience where he conducts translational research focused on understanding the neurobiological basis of PTSD. Dr. Kazama is also involved in the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative. Finally, in his limited free time, he greatly enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children.

Above all he is my friend with a FASCINATING STORY. This is a can't miss episode.

She grew up, a GenX'er eating ice-cream, and watching that one episode of The Cosby Show where Theo & Cockroach get on soul train. She knows every Clerks, Lovelines, and Star Wars reference known to humankind.

And fast forward from the summer between freshman and sophomore year of high school (aka The Beach MTV years), and she made a concerted effort to get more attention from men by losing a few pounds. At summer's end, Erin had lost 30 pounds.

Twelve-weeks, 30 pounds lighter.

Within a few years, Erin had an eating disorder.

Erin is a Holistic Health Coach, Certified Life and Weight Loss Coach, Food Addiction Counselor and author of the upcoming “Why Can’t I Stick To My Diet?" Life coaching was of great interest to Erin and wanted to get formally trained to add more value to her clients. She completed her Life Coaching and Weight Loss Certification program with The Life School founded by Brooke Castillo in August of 2018.
