This story began in April 2022, Erik Holt left federal service at Ft. Carson, CO, after 18 years to raise his daughters and accepted the Fire Chief position at a small rural department in Colorado. Within a year, with the support of an outstanding board and dedicated personnel, he and his staff transformed the fire department from 5 to over 60 trained, qualified, and dedicated personnel. 

Then came the May 2023 election. For the first time, all five board seats were up for election. Chief Holt received complaints from citizens regarding irregularities at the polls. He personally sat down and reviewed 48 hours of surveillance footage and discovered clear evidence of coordinated election misconduct. I

Chief Holt asked himself the four questions we always talk about on the WSL Podcast: what is the right thing to do, when to do it, how to doit and what are the reasons for doing it? He followed his legal and moral obligation and reported the findings to the District Attorney’s office. That decision changed everything.

When free speech, retaliation, and corruption tried to take test his integrity, Chief Holt stood his ground and suffered great consequences.

From the darker side of the law to the ridiculous side, Jack Straw gives us a real look at life -from life behind the badge to life behind the bars of prison, and life on the outside.

As a law enforcement officer in the Midwest, Jack Straw rose the ranks rapidly becoming a captain at 26. He was a patrol officer, investigator and later specialized in interrogations and child abuse cases. 

He left law enforcement and started a business, and that's where he got sideways with the feds. He stole money and ended up with a 15 year prison sentence and was shipped to La Tuna FCI on the border with Texas and Mexico. 

While there, he hung out with gangbangers, cartel members, bank robbers and George Jung, the man Johnny Depp played in the movie "Blow." He was eventually transferred to other facilities that had much lower security protocols and  later became friends with a totally different crowd; politicians, incarcerated cops, NFL players and doctors. Yep, Club Fed. 

During this time he wrote three books, became a successful "jailhouse lawyer" and observed a world that works unlike anyone really thinks it does. But here’s what I’ve learned as a Warrior Servant Leader: we were never meant to fight alone. Servant leadership breaks that loneliness. Because it’s not about being untouchable—it’s about being connected. It’s not about thrones—it’s about circles.

1. Circles, not thrones. Build a trusted circle of brothers, sisters, and mentors. You can’t fight every battle solo.
2. Vulnerability is strength. When you say, ‘I’m struggling too,’ you don’t lose respect—you build trust.
3. Anchor in faith. No leader was designed to carry it all. Strength comes from a higher source.

Reflections on Blessed Carlo Acutis and the Call to Holiness

This week, Blessed Carlo Acutis will officially be canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church. Known as the “patron saint of the internet,” Carlo was only 15 years old when he died of leukemia in 2006, but his short life continues to inspire millions.

He left behind one simple but piercing quote:

“Everyone is born unique, but many die as photocopies.”

Carlo’s words cut through the noise of our modern culture. Too many of us live in comparison, imitation, and conformity. We trade in the masterpiece God created for a blurred copy of someone else’s life.

But Carlo didn’t stop there. He also asked the deeper question:

“What are you doing to be a saint?”

That’s the challenge we unpack in this week’s episode of the Warrior Servant Leader Podcast.

Well you are not alone and today we are going to share some insights on growing right where you are planted or have been transplanted.

We can’t treat people on a daily basis based on how we feel that day. 

We also can’t suppress our feelings and emotions and just suck it up buttercup.

I saw this quote by Stephen Covey a few days ago:

“Always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers.”

My 1st thought….how do you want your employees to treat your worst customers, when you are having a bad day?

Take cops…who are our best customers? How do we treat people on our worst day?

How about in family lives? Our faith lives? If we let how we feel rule how we act, we are in for some really rough times. Sometimes we need to learn how to control or manage our feelings before they drag us down into the depths of depression or despair.

In LE, many labels are attached to the job called Police Officer – some not so nice. Law Enforcer. Protector. Cop. Pig. Problem Solver. Servant. Social Worker. Warrior. Guardian. Sheepdog. Seems everyone has their idea of how to describe, label, in one or two words what makes a police officer a police officer.

Why is Warrior such a bad word in these discussions?

Should we even be labeling ourselves as a Warrior, Guardian or Sheepdog? Why not just stick with Police Officer?

Me? I will always pick Warrior any day of the week – at work, home and in my faith life.
