Another area that is often overlooked is investors, especially in these days of self financing and self release.

I met Andy Hillier and Phil Oldcorn through mutual friends and they were introduced to myself and Rob Town as investors in music who were wanting to develop new talent.

What followed was to form the foundations of a continuing relationship with two of the most passionate music fans I have ever met, whose success as business people has allowed them to pursue that passion by genuinely putting their money where their mouths are and by jumping into the trenches of music and art development and having the guts to take a chance. 

In this incredibly revealing and honest podcast, Andy and Phil talk about their motivations, dreams and approaches to working in the modern music business. 

I met Mike back in 1993 when Little Angels were touring the ‘Jam’ album, and he was the last producer to work with the band, recording the '10 Miles High' single. 

Years later I worked with him on The Virginmarys 'Cast The First Stone' EP and we struck up a great friendship. Since then he has mixed a number of records for me and we continue to stay in touch and plan to work with each other whenever we can. 

I think Mike is one of the greatest mix engineers the world has ever seen, his ability to get the best of a recording is quite simply staggering and something of a dark art, so it's a delight to be able to offer this podcast as a way of understanding the man behind the legend.

Starting out as a drummer in local acts around Nottingham in the U.K. Adam quickly realised that his skills lay in organisation and planning having taken the reins in that department with every band he joined. After an initial stint in London managing Stevie James from Tigertailz, he progressed into larger firms including being part of the management team for Motörhead and tour managing acts like Queens Of the Stone Age. 

To date his acts include Black Star Riders, Saxon, Europe, Uriah Heep and Tax The Heat. 

His skills are multitude but as ever it’s about the man and his natural ability to communicate and work closely with others.

In this frank and revealing interview Adam describes his personal journey and philosophical approach to working as a manager in the ever changing and currently incredibly challenging music business.

His company, X-Ray Touring occupy an enviable position in the market with some of the world greatest most highly regarded acts on their books. At the time I had no idea we would have a friendship that would last as long as it has. Andy is from my home town of Lincoln (and still lives there), something that helped cement our personal relationship in the early years, and he quickly became a friend of my family. Over the years Andy has been an unshakeable supporter of everything I’ve ever been involved with, always on the end of the phone offering advice and help when many others weren’t.

A music fan from the start and still entirely drenched in that feeling, Andy understands the desires and demands of the fans and the loyalty they hold with music and the bands and artists that create it. This is perhaps his greatest asset: loyalty, and I know many other musicians, agents, managers feel the same. Honest as the days is long and one of the hardest working guys in the music business, Andy personifies the hard work ethic with a golden touch based in fair play and straight talking.

Born into a family of musicians, Wyatt’s first love was in fact acting before falling headlong into the world of music and embarking on a career as a drummer. He has had record deals, made records and toured the world. Eventually finding the world of radio, Wyatt has become a key figure and much-loved voice on Planet Rock radio, helping time support and nurture new talent through his show. In this very honest conversation he discusses his history, his triumphs and struggles, as well as his hopes and future plans.

I’ve been a lifelong fan of Saxon, and indeed the first single I ever bought was ‘Wheels of Steel’ after watching them perform it on Top of the Pops. Years later, Little Angels opened for Saxon in Europe and then much later in 2007, in Tokyo Japan, I had the absolute pleasure of spending an evening with Biff talking about music when Fastway appeared on the same bill as Saxon at the ‘Loud park’ festival. That encounter was the first of many that has led to a very valued friendship. 

Biff has, throughout his incredible career, remained a resilient and tenacious character, determination has been at the forefront of everything he has attempted in life, and Saxon are testament to that approach. Now in their 40th year and celebrating that fact, the band go from strength to strength and the reason is quite simple, Biff is at the helm and he is as focused and as determined as ever.
