On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, we explore the many lives of Robert “Buddy” Hackett. He lives the Good Life as Plato spoke about in Phaedrus (375 BC).

Here's a view of Buddy's life.

Buddy is a native of Massachusetts. He graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School and was in the distinguished military corps of cadets at Norwich University. He was in the class of 1990 but was deployed to the Middle East, as an 0311 Marine Rifleman, during the Persian Gulf War of the early 1990s.

Buddy completed his BS degree in Communications after his combat deployment in the Middle East and he was part of the legendary Norwich University Rugby Football Club. Additionally he motivated lots of Marines at Norwich as serving Semper Fidelis Society President. After Operation Desert Storm, Buddy remained serving as a Staff Sergeant in an elite Marine STA (Surveillance and Target Acquisition) Platoon.

He has had a career in corporate for many years and has coached numerous individuals in the business community. Buddy is a successful veteran entrepreneur as the owner of Renaissance Firearms and is the co-founder of a Veteran Non-Profit Organization called On the Hunt Veteran Strong that exposes veterans to the outdoors. He is a proud husband and father with his family.

Dr. Alec Grant provides many ways to understand a Veteran.

Grant is a true Interdisciplinary scholar and Veteran (of the British RAF) and has been involved in research, teaching, and clinical work in the following areas: autoethnography, sociology, narrative, nursing education, mental health, philosophy, qualitative, and critical inquiry for over 25 years. He is the recipient of the International Conference of Autoethnography (ICAE) 2020 Inaugural Lifetime Contribution Award.

Munoz-Dones is a military legend and has served in many war zones including Iraq and Afghanistan and retired as the Global War on Terror was ending. He experienced direct military training from all military branches (including Navy and Air Force). He shares with viewers gems of wisdom tied to the different leadership styles of the different branches of the US military from his military experiences dating back to 1975. A Deeper Meaning: The Marine Corps Boot Camp Gender Integration Study

This episode of Veteran Et Cetera examines the US Marine Corps' 18 month study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh in 2020. The media has been presenting the study with myths that have caused political division in the military with fears of a "wokeism" in the military. There was a 2015 study sponsored by the US Dep of Defense but riddled with many scholars claiming that it was biased. The study was never signed off by Military top leadership. It was not dated, etc. The 2020 study has more reputable scholars tied to an evidence-based , peer-reviewed research study to understand the challenges and the present state of gender integration for US Marine Boot Camp. John has been a pioneering Force Recon Marine and as a Ranger in Surviving the Cut originally aired on the Discovery Channel in 2010 and featured John Winn Bey transcending the most advanced military leadership training "Ranger School". Back in the 90s John was a champion on the legendary show American Gladiators. John's other trailblazing ways was being chosen for Mark Barnett's classic Post 9/11 special operations training reality show"Combat Missions" hosted by the legendary Navy SEAL and TV hit Show "Survivor" star Rudy Boesch.

John Winn Bey's life is not just his pioneering television presence as a Warfighter. John's background includes his rich family tradition and his service to his country. John left a promising college program to serve in the US Marines. He became an elite Force Recon Marine well before there was a MARSOC. John deployed numerous times to war zones. His first war experience goes back to the Persian Gulf War as being tip of the spear facing Iraq's tip forces the Republican Guard. John would rejoin the military and serve again during the Post 9/11 War on Terror in multiple combat deployments. He would also distinguish himself at Ranger School in his 40s.

Mike Kurth: A Ranger from Black Hawk Down Speaks...

On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, Mike Kim discusses the overlooked aspects of the Battle of Mogadishu with Mike Kurth. Mike Kurth served as an Airborne Ranger with 3rd Ranger Battalion from 1991-1996. He is known for being a significant figure in the Battle of Mogadishu. Kurth has been portrayed in the movie Black Hawk Down and wrote about his Mogadishu experience in the highly acclaimed book The Battle of Mogadishu: Firsthand Accounts from the Men of Taskforce Ranger (2005).

The award winning documentary show Frontline provides this biography of Mike Kurth during the Battle of Mogadishu: He was a Helicopter Radio Operator for Sgt. Watson, Chalk III - Super Six Six. Basic mission was to update the Commander on their position and situation and keep Sergeant Watson in contact. Physically stayed with Sergeant Watson on all the missions, except the October 3rd -- had to be pulled for security as well as do the radio communications. He was 24 at the time of the ambush.

Mike Kurth is an influencer to many veterans and civilians as a member of GoRuck and many other veteran organizations and causes. When he is not helping vets, he excels in management for the bar and restaurant industry. Kurth comes from a long line of family members who served in the military.

Mike Kim, Veteran Et Cetera host, is pleased to have Joe Bello, on this episode, to discuss how he has mastered veteran advocacy from a local to a federal level. He has been honored by many in the vet community and in 2019 was inducted into the NYS Veterans' Hall of Fame.

Joe Bello is a true New Yorker. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1984-1995, with duty aboard the USS South Carolina, USS Nimitz and USS Mahlon S. Tisdale. He is a Persian Gulf War Veteran.

For decades, He has been active in our community ever since, serving and giving voice to vets of all generations. He studied at NYU with the great political media analyst Dr. Neil Postman. He is currently the book review editor for ETC: A Review of General Semantics and a contributing editor to The Satirist: America’s Most Critical Journal. He has taught courses in the social sciences at NYU, Adelphi University, Saint John’s University, New York Institute of Technology, and Medgar Evers College.

The Man who Played General Mattis

Are you curious about the actor who played General Mattis in the military HBO series cult classic Generation Kill?

Robert John Burke is a renowned American actor who played Marine Corps legend General James "Mad Dog" Mattis in the memorable HBO series Generation Kill. Robert Burke is actively with the veteran advocacy organization VETHACK.

Besides being in Generation Kill, Robert Burke has distinguished himself in the other acting roles: RoboCop 3 (1993), Tombstone (1993), and Thinner (1996). During the 2000s Burke became well known for his portrayal of Mickey Gavin on Rescue Me (2004-11), Bart Bass in Gossip Girl (2007–12), Ed Tucker in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (2002–20), and a number of other film and television roles including Netflix Intrusion (2021).

Today's podcast Mike talks with Stuart (Stu) Doyle, a Marine Recon Reservist, Amateur MMA fighter and scholar with a M.S. in Criminology, about his thoughts on veteran readjustment culture.

Bio

Stu's admiration for the Marine Corps started at age 9 and by age 13 he had focused on becoming a Recon Marine. At age 17 Stu headed for boot camp, then infantry and straight for the Basic Recon Course. He spent the rest of his active enlistment with 1st Recon Bn and deployed to Afghanistan as a Recon Marine.

Stu completed a BA at Columbia in Neuroscience and Behavior followed by a M.S. in Criminology at University of Penn. As a source of income during college, he selected security related work for billionaires and after his Ivy League studies he settled in Hollywood and continued with employment in high level security. However, Stu found he needed more of a challenge and returned to the Corps. He joined the Reserves and is still an active reservist with 3rd Force Recon Co.

To continue his journey of challenges alongside the Marine Recon, he is pursuing a profession as a pro MMA fighter as well as a desire to begin his PhD program in either philosophy or psychology within a couple years.

His life has been a spiritual journey, spanning slightly over 7 decades. His whole life has been a mystical trip in search of gurus, the paranormal, and self-discovery. He has written about his many spiritually transforming experiences and “near-death-experiences” including supernatural events during his combat tour of duty in the Vietnam War. In his books he has shared some incredible spiritual events that are beyond both common understanding or explanation. His autobiography “Warrior A Spiritual Odyssey” takes us on a life quest for love, understanding, forgiveness and enlightenment. His follow-up book (Publishing date 2017) “Alchemy of a Warrior’s Heart “continues that mystical journey including four trips to India for even more profound experiences with holy men, miracles and his personal relationship with the Divine. She is a graduate of the Warren Wilson College M.F.A. Program for Writers. She is the recipient of two fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, 1995-1997. In 1998, she was awarded a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation. She lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Mary Jane's works include the acclaimed book Beautiful Unbroken: One Nurse's Life.

American Veterans Volunteering for Ukraine, Why?

The number of volunteers in Ukraine from around the world number at over 20,000. Ukrainian President Zelensky has asked for volunteers since the Russian Invasion started back in late February of this year. There have been a number of American veterans who have answered the call to volunteer for war in the Ukraine. One volunteer acquainted with your host, Mike Kim, has the heart of gold and has just left his daughter and his wife. This young man is a decorated Iraq War Veteran. Did he join because of a tribal urge to protect others? Did he join because of a desire to be a part of a group again? These are intriguing questions. But a major concern on Mike's mind as a seasoned war trauma therapist and an Iraq War Veteran is that the Veteran he knows, who volunteered for Ukraine, has placed his war readjustment on hold to return to a war zone. What does that mean to his family? What is going to be his readjustment when he returns to his home, if he survives the devastating war in Ukraine?

The media keeps on treating this war in Ukraine like a sporting event. We can choose how to absorb it. Mike has had many sleepless nights thinking about U.S. troops being sent to Ukraine. and wonders if Ukraine will be in another Forever War. Even though Mike does not not condone the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, we have to ponder if using diplomacy might be better than joining another War.
