On this episode of VOC, we are joined by Edie Argueta. He was a survivor of the historic battle of Fallujah in Iraq. His story is profound on so many levels. He has been active in supporting veterans and still does great work in the Veteran community. He was just honored by the Queen City Council for his work with veterans.

Edie is a father, husband, and Marine. He shipped out to basic training a month after his high school graduation (on his birthday). He deployed twice in support of OIF. At only 1 year old, he crossed into the US in the arms of his grandmother where he was reunited with his mother. His family is originally from El Salvador. Together they settled in Jamaica, Queens, where he would grow up. He currently resides in Maspeth, Queens.

VOC Veterans Of Color takes a historical dive into a bunch of warriors who wanted a better life for themselves and others. American military intersectionality goes back to the early 1800s with the formation of the St Patrick's Battalion by many US military men who were poor, Irish, and other European immigrants, Catholics, escaped slaves, freed, and African Americans. They came together with their differences to promote intersectionality in the areas of race, class, and nationality.

This is the first episode of VOC Veterans of Color Podcast sponsored by Coming Home Well, that explores the cultural and historical legacies of Veterans of Color in the US military.

On this first episode, the host of VOC, Mike Kim, a veteran and military history/culture analyst, will be interviewing Dr. Geraldine Seay, about the African American troop presence in the intrepid World War II combat mission of constructing the Ledo Road from India to China.

Dr. Geraldine Seay has spent ten years researching the grand feat of military engineering "The Ledo Road". The Ledo Road, mostly involved World War II African Americans troops. The Ledo Road prevented Japanese forces from expanding their Empire.

Some background highlights of Dr. Seay: she is an interdisciplinary humanities and social sciences researcher, and a retired Florida A & M University tenured faculty member. She is a mother of two adult children and wife to esteemed jazz musician Clarence Seay. Dr. Seay has a Master's in English from Georgetown University. Furthering her education and passion for research, she obtained the McKnight Fellowship and attended the University of Florida, from which she completed a PH.D. in American Literature.

Dr. Seay's research on the Ledo Road can be found in her book "African Americans, World War II and the Ledo Stilwell Road" published in 2019. ·
